Cynthia Erivo has described claiming her full self as a queer woman of colour as a risk—and being visible as a way to help a young Black queer actress know she is not alone. In later conversations about Wicked, she connected that experience of difference to Elphaba, whose story speaks to people who feel unwelcome or out of place.
What Erivo said about claiming her identity
In a British Vogue interview with Jacqueline Woodson published July 11, 2022, Erivo spoke about being a queer woman of colour and the decision to claim that identity publicly. She called it “taking a risk to claim the freedom of being one’s full self.” Read the British Vogue interview.
For Erivo, visibility also had consequences beyond her own life. She said, “The consequence is that some young Black queer actress somewhere will know coming in that she’s not alone.” The point was not that being out is simple or without risk, but that a younger person might see someone with a shared identity in public life and feel less isolated.
Finding words for attraction
In the same conversation, Erivo described recognizing her attraction to people before she had the vocabulary to explain it. She recalled growing up in London with Nigerian parents and attending Catholic school; these are details from her account in that interview, not a claim that every part of her experience can be reduced to those circumstances. The distinction matters: she was describing how she came to understand herself, rather than presenting a single path to queer identity.

How she connects difference to Elphaba
In coverage of Wicked, Erivo connected her experience as a queer Black woman with playing Elphaba, a character marked as different in Oz. Yahoo Entertainment reported on a Variety interview in which Erivo described the role as a way to reach people who feel different or unwelcome, including Black women who have felt they do not belong. That is Erivo’s interpretation of the character’s resonance; it should not be confused with a claim that Elphaba’s story is identical to her own. Read Yahoo Entertainment’s report.
The connection is less about making difference disappear than about making it visible in a story. Erivo has spoken about the possibility that a trait someone experiences as isolating may also become a source of recognition and strength.

“The thing that makes you feel like an outsider”
In an NPR interview about Wicked, Erivo put the idea directly: “I would say that that thing that makes you feel like an outsider is that thing that also makes you special.” The statement offers a perspective, not a guarantee that exclusion will feel empowering. Its force comes from the possibility that what sets someone apart can also help them recognize others who have felt outside the norm. Listen to or read the NPR interview.

In a separate NPR transcript carried by VPM, Erivo reflected on Wicked’s themes of exclusion and belonging, saying, “There is room to change. There is room for empathy, there is room for growth.” That emphasis keeps the outsiderhood message from becoming a simple celebration of being different: the story also asks people to make room for change in how they treat one another.
