Cynthia Erivo objected to a fan edit of the Wicked film poster because it covered her eyes and altered her face. She said the film image’s direct gaze was intentional: unlike the illustrated Broadway poster, it showed her as a real person. Erivo described the edit as erasing her, while the account that shared it said it intended a tribute and apologized for the hurt it may have caused.
What changed in the poster
The film poster shows Erivo as Elphaba looking toward the viewer, with Ariana Grande as Glinda beside her. A fan edit shaded or covered Erivo’s eyes under Elphaba’s hat, changed her lips and adjusted Grande’s hand to make the image more closely resemble the familiar Broadway poster composition. The Broadway artwork is an illustration; the film poster features the actors.
The edit circulated before the film’s November 2024 theatrical release. Erivo responded to it in an Instagram Story on October 16, 2024. The Los Angeles Times reported her reaction, and TheWrap described the changes made in the edit.
Why Erivo said the edit was hurtful
Erivo wrote, “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen.” She contrasted the Broadway illustration with the film’s image, saying, “The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION. I am a real life human being.”

She explained that the film poster’s direct gaze mattered: “without words we communicate with our eyes.” In her view, changing the image was not simply a closer match to the stage artwork. “Our poster is an homage not an imitation,” she wrote, before adding: “To edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful.”
Those words describe Erivo’s understanding of the edit’s effect; they do not establish that its maker intended to erase or harm her. Her objection centered on how the altered image treated her face and removed the direct gaze she said had been chosen for the film poster. The San Francisco Chronicle also reported her response and explanation.

What the account behind the edit said
The account that shared the altered poster told Bustle it had meant to post an image it found creative and satisfying as a tribute to the Broadway poster. It apologized for the message the edit may have sent. That explanation offers the account’s stated intent, not proof that the edit could not be hurtful to Erivo. Bustle reported the account’s explanation and apology.
How Erivo later reflected on her reaction
In a later interview reported by Forbes from Entertainment Tonight, Erivo described her response as “a human moment of wanting to protect little Elphaba.” She added: “I probably should have called my friends, but it’s fine.” The reflection gives context for her reaction without retracting her description of the edit as hurtful. Forbes reported her later comments.

The brief context behind the two images
Wicked began as a 1995 novel, became a Broadway musical that premiered in 2003, and was adapted for the film. That history helps explain why fans recognized and referenced the stage poster, but Erivo’s distinction was between an illustrated character image and a film poster showing her as a living actor. Forbes also notes the novel and musical background.
