Chappell Roan inducted Lauper; Roan’s introduction was a separate moment from Lauper’s remarks.
What Lauper said in her acceptance speech
The speech’s central message was intergenerational support among women artists. The Associated Press reported Lauper saying: “I know that I stand on the shoulders of the women in the industry that came before me. And my shoulders are broad enough for the women that came after me stand on mine.”
The Hall’s official video description gives a shorter version: “My shoulders are broad enough to have the women who come after me stand on mine.” Because the published versions differ and the sources do not provide a complete official transcript, treat them as attributed versions rather than combining them into a single quotation. Watch the Rock Hall’s official acceptance-speech video.
Who inducted Lauper—and what Roan said
Chappell Roan introduced Lauper before the acceptance speech. The Rock Hall’s artist profile identifies Roan as the person who inducted her, and the Associated Press reports that Roan praised Lauper for redefining what a pop star could look like, sound like, and sing like. That characterization belongs to Roan’s introduction, not Lauper’s speech.

The speech in the context of Lauper’s performance
The Associated Press reported that Lauper performed “True Colors” as a call for courage and shouted “don’t be afraid!” during the song. She then sang “Time After Time” with Raye and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” with Avril Lavigne, backed by an all-female band that included Gina Schock of the Go-Go’s. Salt-N-Pepa joined later in the performance.
That performance context resonates with the speech’s focus on women’s influence across generations, but it is distinct from the acceptance remarks themselves. The Hall lists “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “Time After Time” on She’s So Unusual (1983), and “True Colors” on True Colors (1986). The Hall says Lauper’s debut yielded four Top 5 hits.
