Cyndi Lauper’s 68-date Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour ended in August 2025, but “farewell” described the touring run—not a promise to stop performing. Looking back, Lauper said she wanted the tour to celebrate her music, fans and friends. Her reflections also offer a clear picture of what sustained her career: persistence, preparation, creative instinct and the example of women artists she considers heroes.
What was the point of Cyndi Lauper’s farewell tour?
For Lauper, the tour was a chance to stage the large-scale show she had long imagined. In an October 2025 GRAMMY interview, she described wanting arenas, carefully designed sets and lighting, and collaborators who could help shape the music and visuals. “The only goal I had was to celebrate the music, the fans and my friends.” She credited creative partner Brian Burke with helping bring that vision to life.
The official tour announcement emphasized the show’s visual-art dimension, naming work by Yayoi Kusama, Daniel Wurtzel, Christian Siriano and Geoffrey Mac. The tour also involved musical guests; its finale at the Hollywood Bowl included guest performances and was filmed for a television special. These elements made the tour a celebration built around Lauper’s songs and the creative community around them, rather than simply a final run of dates.
A completed tour, not a permanent retirement announcement
The global run comprised 68 dates and concluded in August 2025 with two Hollywood Bowl shows. Lauper’s official website had announced 25 North American summer shows beginning July 15, 2025, as part of the final leg. The word “farewell” applied to touring: Caesars announced a separate five-show residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace for April 24–May 2, 2026. Those dates have passed, and the cited announcements do not establish a later schedule.

What career lessons did Lauper share?
In a June 2024 interview with The Guardian, Lauper’s advice to young artists was direct: “For a young artist, the one thing I would want them to know is you don’t give up, right?” She described waiting for an opportunity while preparing, then finding another route around gatekeepers when they blocked the way.
That advice was not a claim that persistence makes self-doubt disappear. Lauper spoke candidly about still having panic attacks over not being good enough, while continuing to move forward and try. Her example is more nuanced than a simple call to believe in yourself: keep developing your work, be ready when an opening appears, and do not treat one person’s refusal as the final word.

Trust the work and your creative instincts
In the 2025 GRAMMY interview, Lauper described creativity as something that requires active attention, not waiting for ideal conditions. “You can’t just pull a song out of thin air and you can’t wait around until inspiration strikes you.” She said writers must follow their gut. She also linked musical and social-political expression, describing the use of her platform to help make the world better as part of her outlook.
Who are Cyndi Lauper’s musical heroes?
After her Hall of Fame induction was announced, Lauper named Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Joni Mitchell and Wanda Jackson among the artists she admired. “I’m humbled to be in the company of so many of my heroes – Aretha, Tina, Chaka, Joni, Wanda, to name just a few.” She placed the recognition in the context of women’s contributions to music and rock and roll.

Chaka Khan and Joni Mitchell also appeared at tour events, but Lauper’s statement presents them as long-standing inspirations, not artists whose importance to her began with those appearances. The names she chose span distinct musical paths; together, they make visible the women’s influence Lauper wanted recognized alongside her own honor.
