No credible evidence shows that Labubus are possessed. The claim spread online in 2025 after social-media users compared the collectible toy’s face with depictions of Pazuzu, an ancient Mesopotamian demon. That comparison is a resemblance claim, not evidence of a supernatural link: Pop Mart describes Labubu as a fictional forest elf, and reporting documented viral posts and some owners destroying toys—not paranormal activity.
What is Labubu, and where did the character come from?
Labubu is a fictional character created by artist Kasing Lung for THE MONSTERS, a picture-book world introduced in 2015. Pop Mart’s official character page describes Labubu as an elf who lives in a forest and belongs to a tribe of more than 100 elves. The character is curious, mischievous, and kind-hearted, with pointed ears and nine teeth.
The Associated Press reported that Lung’s picture books drew on Nordic mythology. He partnered with Pop Mart in 2019 to sell figures, and the company began selling plush keyrings in 2023. Those products helped move Labubu from a story character into the world of collectibles and fashion accessories. In June 2025, AP reported 1.4 million TikTok posts using #Labubu; that is a publication-time snapshot, not a current count. AP’s June 4, 2025 report also quoted Pop Mart’s head of IP licensing in the Americas describing the character as a collectible and style symbol.
Why did people say Labubus were possessed?
In late June 2025, users on TikTok and Instagram began comparing Labubu’s toothy face and eyes with depictions of Pazuzu. Some called the doll a “demonic toy” or claimed it “moves on its own.” Those statements were attributed to social-media users; they were not verified findings. Arab News reported that some owners reportedly destroyed toys or listed them as possessed. The South China Morning Post reported on July 18, 2025 that some fans burned their dolls after the Pazuzu comparison circulated.

These reports establish that the rumor circulated and that some people reacted to it. They do not show how many Labubu owners believed it, how widespread the reactions were, or that any toy behaved supernaturally. Pop Mart’s stated character lore places Labubu in a fictional fairy world; the cited reporting does not establish a historical or supernatural connection to Pazuzu.

| Is there a documented real-world safety concern? | Yes. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned about counterfeit lookalikes that can pose choking hazards; this is a physical product-safety issue, not evidence of a curse. CPSC, August 18, 2025. |
What is the real safety warning about counterfeit Labubus?
Separate from the supernatural rumor, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning on August 18, 2025 about counterfeit Labubu lookalikes, sometimes called “Lafufu.” The CPSC said some were small enough to block a child’s airway and that fakes could break apart and release small choking hazards. It advised consumers not to buy those knockoffs and to stop using them. Read the CPSC warning for its full guidance.

The agency listed several cues for identifying genuine Pop Mart Labubus:
- A holographic Pop Mart sticker.
- A scannable QR code linking to Pop Mart.
- On newer editions, a subtle UV stamp on one foot.
- Nine teeth; the CPSC notes that fakes may have the wrong number.
These are the regulator’s indicators, not a guarantee that a marketplace listing is authentic. The CPSC also advises using trusted sellers. For children, follow applicable age and small-parts warnings even when a toy appears genuine.

Why did Labubu become a collectible craze?
The character’s rise has a documented commercial side: picture books came first, followed by Pop Mart figures and, from 2023, plush keyrings. AP described Labubu as both a collectible and a fashion accessory. It reported that U.S. toy sales to people aged 18 and over rose 12% year over year in the first quarter of 2025, with $1.8 billion in adult toy spending during that quarter; both figures were attributed to Circana. AP also reported that buyers aged 18 and over accounted for more than $800 million of U.S. toy-market year-over-year growth in 2024, and that Pop Mart’s plush-toy revenue rose more than 1,200% in 2024, representing nearly 22% of the company’s revenue, citing the company’s annual report. These dated market figures help explain the collectible boom, but they say nothing about belief in the possession rumor.
