Curry & Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case has a compelling subject, but reviewer Rohan Naahar argues that its compressed storytelling leaves the central questions underexplored. The result, in his view, is a documentary that recounts a disturbing case without making its evidence, motives or setting sufficiently clear. That criticism needs a qualification: unanswered questions may reflect both the film’s choices and the limits of a criminal case that was still proceeding in December 2023.
What is Curry & Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case about?
Netflix describes the 2023 film as a documentary about six deaths in one family and Jolly Joseph. Its title page identifies it as an Indian, Malayalam-language historical true-crime documentary, with Malayalam original audio and several dubbed-audio and subtitle options. Netflix India announced a streaming date of 22 December 2023 in Malayalam, Hindi and English; that announcement does not establish current availability in every country. Netflix’s title page and Netflix India’s announcement provide those details.
The documentary concerns allegations and a criminal case, not a court judgment. The dates associated with the deaths also vary by account: Rohan Naahar’s 2023 review in The Indian Express places six deaths in Koodathayi between 2002 and 2014, while a Scroll search result described six associated deaths between 2002 and 2016. Those ranges should not be treated as interchangeable or as a definitive finding about the case. Naahar’s review; Scroll’s indexed result.
Why did the review call it incomplete?
Naahar rated the film 2 out of 5. His main objection is not that the subject lacks drama, but that a complex story is pushed through too quickly to examine its competing accounts. He describes a breakneck pace that leaves little room for cross-examination and says the film does not build a convincing portrait of Joseph or explain her possible motives. That is a critical assessment of the documentary, not a finding about Joseph’s guilt or state of mind.

The case’s central questions remain open
Naahar points to questions the film leaves unclear: why the dead husband’s siblings turned against Joseph when they did; who the alleged cyanide suppliers were; whether police planted evidence; and what motive could explain the deaths. The review raises these as unresolved questions, not established facts. When a documentary does not answer them, viewers are left to distinguish between gaps in the film’s account and uncertainties that may belong to the case itself.
The visuals do little to establish place
The review also criticizes the film’s reliance on talking heads and news clippings rather than more on-location footage. In Naahar’s view, the recreations do not give the story an effective sense of place. For a case rooted in Koodathayi, that matters: location can help viewers understand how people, homes and events relate to one another. On his account, the film’s visual approach supplies less context than the story needs.

What does the forensic and legal context change?
A key limit is that the documentary’s story should not be mistaken for a settled account of six proven poisonings. In a December 2023 report, The New Indian Express said trials were ongoing and quoted Dr Krishnan Balendran, an additional professor of forensic medicine at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. Balendran said that only the death of Joseph’s husband, Roy Thomas, had been found to have been caused by cyanide poisoning. Of the remaining exhumed cases, he said: “In the remaining cases, there is no certified cause of death as the exhumation didn’t reveal cyanide poisoning.” These were the expert’s statements as reported at that time, not a substitute for current court records or a final judicial determination. The New Indian Express report.
The same report quoted Balendran criticizing the film’s use of witnesses and investigators: “By featuring key witnesses and investigating officials the one-and-a-half-hour-long film has set a wrong precedent.” His concern adds a question about documentary method to the review’s questions about pace and clarity: how does a short film handle access to people involved in an active case while also distinguishing testimony, allegation and established evidence?

Is the criticism shared by other reviewers?
The available critical response is mixed, not unanimous. An India Today search result described the documentary as compelling, while a Times of India search result called it a loosely done account. The full texts of those two reviews were not examined, so they offer only limited evidence of differing reactions rather than a basis for detailed comparison. Naahar’s 2-out-of-5 rating is best read as one clearly documented negative judgment, not a consensus.

The film may interest viewers who want an overview of the case and the people involved, but Naahar’s criticism suggests it may frustrate anyone looking for a carefully paced investigation that maps evidence against allegations and explains what remains unknown. A useful way to watch is to ask whether each claim is presented as verified evidence, a witness account, an allegation or an open question—and to keep the documentary’s narrative separate from the case’s legal outcome.
