During an individual investor chat on March 26, 2025, a participant asked about the next anime series based on Cyberpunk 2077. A CD PROJEKT representative identified as KG replied: “I can confirm that we’re working on another anime project set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe; however, we’re not yet at a stage of development where we could share more specific information.” The transcript identifies the speaker only by initials.

How that tease relates to Edgerunners 2
On July 4, 2025, CD PROJEKT RED announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 at its Anime Expo panel. It described the project as a new standalone anime series set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, made with Studio TRIGGER and planned for Netflix. The available official statements do not say whether Edgerunners 2 is the project mentioned in March or a separate production.

The two disclosures should not be counted as proof of two separate forthcoming series. CD PROJEKT’s September 2024 report, the March chat, and the later Edgerunners 2 announcement do not resolve whether they refer to one project or multiple projects.
Release date, episode count, and where to watch
The official Edgerunners 2 site lists a ten-episode series, exclusive to Netflix, with a premiere date of October 20, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, that is a future announced date, not a completed premiere; schedules can change.

What is known about the new series
Edgerunners 2 is presented as a standalone story with a new cast and story, rather than as a continuation requiring viewers to follow the same characters. The official synopsis introduces Weak, a former cyberpunk legend living without chrome, and D, a nomad seeking revenge. It frames the story around family, obsession, legacy, and how stories are seen through a lens; these are the series’ announced premise, not independently verified plot developments.
CD PROJEKT RED named Bartosz Sztybor as showrunner, story writer, and producer; Kai Ikarashi as director; Kanno Ichigo as lead character designer; and Masahiko Otsuka as responsible for screenplay adaptation. Sztybor said: “David’s story might be over, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City.”

Does the anime require playing Cyberpunk 2077?
No companion game requirement is stated. CD PROJEKT RED describes Edgerunners 2 as a standalone series set in the game’s world, so the setting connects the anime to Cyberpunk 2077 without making the game a stated prerequisite for following the new story.
