But a pineapple on a door is not an official cruise code, and it does not establish what any passenger intends.
What happened in the viral cruise video?
PerthNow reported on March 9, 2023, that travel creator Blogionista Travels noticed pineapple stickers or magnets on cabin doors during a first cruise and made a TikTok about the discovery. The caption reproduced in the report began, “When you’re on your first cruise and you see that everyone has these cute pineapples on their door,” before the creator explained the symbol’s adult association. The original clip was not independently available for verification; the video context and wording here are attributed to PerthNow. PerthNow’s report and 7NEWS’s coverage describe the same viral discovery.
What does an upside-down pineapple mean on a cruise ship?
Some people in the swinging or consensual non-monogamy community use an upside-down pineapple to signal lifestyle interest. That association is commonly described in cruise coverage, including The Points Guy’s explanation and Cruise Critic’s overview.
Orientation matters in these explanations: the signal is usually associated with an upside-down pineapple, not every pineapple image. Even then, it is only a possible signal—not proof of a person’s relationship, intentions, or consent. A cabin-door decoration is not an invitation to enter, approach, or initiate sexual contact.

Why a pineapple on a cabin door may mean nothing
Pineapples are also familiar tropical decorations and can evoke hospitality. A sticker or magnet may simply be cheerful vacation decor, a souvenir, or a way to make a cabin door easier to spot. As Oyster notes in its cruise explainer, context matters; the image alone cannot tell you why someone displayed it.
That ambiguity is the key to the viral misunderstanding: noticing pineapples around a ship does not mean that “everyone” displaying one is sending a lifestyle signal. A symbol’s use by some people does not make every instance deliberate or legible to strangers.

Is an upside-down pineapple an official cruise-ship code?
No. It is an informal symbol, not a universal or official cruise-line code. Cruise lines do not thereby certify what a passenger means by a door decoration, and other passengers should not treat it as permission or an invitation.
Did Carnival ban pineapple decorations?
A Carnival ban was not publicly confirmed in the reporting available from Cruise Critic, updated June 19, 2026. The outlet said Carnival brand ambassador John Heald made a since-deleted social-media comment in December 2024 saying upside-down pineapples were “definitely no longer allowed” and would be removed from cabin doors. Cruise Critic also reported that it found no ban on Carnival’s public website and that the company declined to clarify when asked. That is a deleted representative’s comment, not a confirmed, published policy. Cruise Critic’s account provides the policy context.

Mainstream cruises and lifestyle sailings are different
A mainstream cruise ship may have passengers with many different interests, but an informal symbol does not turn the sailing into a lifestyle event. Specifically chartered lifestyle cruises are a separate category. The Points Guy names Bliss Cruise, Temptation Cruises, and Desire Cruises as examples; current schedules and terms should be checked directly with the operators because they are not established by that coverage.
