Emily Prentiss did not really die: she faked her death in Criminal Minds Season 6, Episode 18, returned in Season 7, and eventually rose to lead the BAU. Paget Brewster’s real-life path was different: she left the regular cast after Season 7, appeared as a guest, and returned full-time in Season 12.
Did Emily Prentiss really die?
No. In Season 6, Episode 18, “Lauren,” Prentiss stages her death after her past catches up with her and the BAU. The Paramount+ episode synopsis confirms that she makes the decision to fake her death and that not everyone on the team knows the truth.

The deception is a survival measure within the story, not the character’s final exit. Prentiss is alive and in hiding while her colleagues believe she has died.
When does Prentiss come back, and why is the team angry?
Prentiss returns in Season 7. Executive producer Erica Messer told TV Guide that Hotch and JJ had kept her survival secret while she was in hiding. Her return therefore means more than a reunion: the other BAU members have to grapple with being deceived by two trusted colleagues as well as with Prentiss’s apparent death.

Messer described the emotional cost of the experience this way: “No one goes into hiding and comes out unscathed.” Prentiss comes back exhausted and defensive, and has to face the team and explain what happened. Messer said the colleagues kept in the dark would ultimately forgive Hotch and JJ.
Why did Paget Brewster leave Criminal Minds?
Brewster’s employment history should not be mistaken for Prentiss’s fake death. Brewster remained on the show through Season 7; after that, Prentiss’s story took her to a counter-terrorism job in England. In a 2017 interview, Brewster told Assignment X that she was open to guest-starring and had returned twice before being asked to guest-star again in 2016.

Those guest appearances bridged the gap between Brewster’s departure as a regular and her return to the cast. The character’s work abroad supplied an in-story reason for Prentiss to be away; the guest appearances were part of Brewster’s real-world return to the series.
How did Prentiss return full-time?
In 2016, Brewster was initially slated for six episodes of Season 12. Contemporary reports from CBS News and TV Guide said her role expanded from that plan to regular status. Brewster said the production asked her to stay, and she agreed. These are production details, not an in-story explanation for why Prentiss rejoined the BAU.

Prentiss’s character had meanwhile built a career away from the team. Brewster told CBS News in 2016: “She’s been running Interpol for four years, and now it’s just really nice to be back on the team full-time.” The Interpol reference is part of the character’s history, distinct from Brewster’s casting timeline.

Prentiss’s authority changed over time, so the title attached to her role depends on the series era. A 2017 account described her as special agent in charge of the BAU branch. A later Paramount+ retrospective traces her path to BAU chief. In Criminal Minds: Evolution, a 2022 TV Insider report says she holds both Unit Chief and Section Chief roles.

That progression is the basis for saying Prentiss eventually took over leadership of the show’s central team—not that she replaced the entire ensemble. She moves from a field agent with a hidden survival story to a senior leader responsible for the BAU.
