Concert photo etiquette comes down to four things: confirm the rules for that show, stay within your authorized area and time, work without obstructing others, and never assume flash is allowed. A photo pass is permission under specific conditions—not a universal right to photograph anywhere or for as long as you like.
1. Confirm the rules before you shoot
The familiar “first three songs, no flash” arrangement is common, but it is not a universal entitlement. Adobe describes it as a usual photo-pass arrangement, while Glastonbury says pit photography is ultimately at the performer’s discretion and advises photographers to confirm in advance whether the first-three-song convention applies. Check the artist, venue, event, or press instructions before the show, and ask the appropriate contact if anything is unclear.
Before arriving, find out the permitted window, where you may shoot, what equipment is allowed, and whether you must leave or follow a particular route when your time ends. Glastonbury’s guidance and the event policies discussed below show why one show’s rules cannot safely be assumed to apply to another.
2. Treat your pass as limited access
A photo credential does not automatically grant access to the backstage area, every part of the venue, or any location beyond the one specified. For example, the Bahama Breeze Music Festival’s published 2026 rules limit photographers to designated media areas or the photo pit and require an escort to enter other areas. That is the festival’s policy for 2026, not a general rule for all events.

Use the access you were given, and ask staff before moving somewhere that is not clearly included. If a policy requires an escort or restricts you to a particular area, follow it even if another photographer appears to have different access.
3. Work courteously and leave when required
Arrive early enough to collect your credential, locate the photo pit, and introduce yourself to security or event staff. During the show, keep clear of security work, performers, audience members, and other photographers. Move efficiently rather than holding a position or blocking someone else’s view, and leave the pit promptly when your approved window ends.

Event safety guidance emphasizes that photographers must not interfere with safety work and that pit access may be limited to an agreed number of songs or a set period. Follow instructions from security and event staff immediately. MPB also advises photographers not to post photos of their credentials.
4. Check the flash and equipment policy
Do not infer flash permission from what happened at another show. The Bahama Breeze Music Festival’s 2026 rules prohibit flash during live performances. SXSW’s published policy takes a different approach: flash is permitted during the first three songs of a music set and prohibited afterward. SXSW also warns that artists, venues, or showcases may have different rules, and directs photographers to follow staff instructions. Check the specific policy in force for your event.

Equipment limits can vary too. Under the Bahama Breeze Music Festival’s 2026 rules, tripods, monopods, drones, and professional lighting require advance approval. Ask before bringing or using equipment that may be restricted; a camera pass alone does not establish that it is permitted.

- Time: What songs or time period are approved, and when must you leave?
- Place: Which areas may you use, and do you need an escort elsewhere?
- Flash: Is it prohibited, permitted only during a specific window, or governed by another instruction?
- Gear: Are tripods, monopods, drones, lighting, or other equipment restricted or subject to advance approval?
- On-site directions: Where do you collect your credential, where is the pit, and who should you ask if the written rules are unclear?
These checks reflect policy differences documented by Glastonbury, the Bahama Breeze Music Festival, and SXSW. If you will be working close to the sound system, Adobe recommends bringing earplugs; that is general advice, not a claim about a particular model or protection rating.
