The Book of Compassion, by the Dalai Lama, Kailash Satyarthi and Pooja Pande, argues that compassion can support purpose, peace of mind and a sense of youthful energy. That is the book’s philosophical claim—not evidence that compassion prevents visible aging or extends life. A meditation study cited in the excerpt measured a biological marker after an intensive retreat; it did not test whether compassion alone makes people younger.
What the book means by “staying youthful”
The phrase comes from a Scroll.in excerpt from The Book of Compassion, published on September 25, 2024, with a permission line naming Penguin India. The authors connect compassion with meaningful engagement and peace of mind, and use the Dalai Lama’s vitality as an anecdotal illustration. Scroll recounts his line from a video message published on his 86th birthday in 2021: “In spite of my old age, my face is quite handsome.” It is a playful remark, not scientific evidence about aging.
In this context, youthful means energized and engaged, rather than biologically younger. The excerpt’s argument is best read as a view about how compassion can shape a life, not as a promise about appearance, lifespan or health outcomes.
How compassion becomes action in Satyarthi’s example
Kailash Satyarthi describes Bal Mitra Mandal, a child-led, child-centric initiative that the Kailash Satyarthi Foundation had run in several Indian states since 2007. The excerpt’s Sanjay Colony account shows compassion as relationship-building and local participation, rather than simply giving aid.

Satyarthi says volunteers were asked “not to go there and start distributing chocolates, but to accept chocolates if they’re offered to them.” The exchange was intended to build reciprocal relationships. Children, parents and volunteers then organized activities that included street theatre and painting walls with children’s dreams. Satyarthi says child sexual abuse and drug use fell and police violence reached zero. Those are his reported outcomes; the excerpt does not provide independent evaluation, a measurement period or supporting data.
What the meditation study measured—and what it did not
The excerpt also points to research from the Shamatha Project, a three-month residential meditation retreat that included compassion practices alongside other training. The Saron Lab at the University of California, Davis, describes 60 healthy people with prior meditation experience randomly assigned to a retreat group or a matched wait-list control group, 30 in each. Retreat participants practiced alone for about six hours a day, while the project collected psychological, behavioral, physiological and biochemical measures.

A 2010 UC Davis report said retreat participants’ white blood cells had about one-third higher telomerase activity than those of matched controls at the end of the retreat. The report also described a relationship between psychological changes and telomerase activity, and said further studies should replicate and extend the finding. Telomerase activity is a biological marker; the study did not measure whether participants looked younger, aged more slowly or lived longer.
Because the retreat involved intensive meditation training and multiple practices, including compassion, the finding cannot establish that compassion alone raised telomerase activity. Nor does it show that everyday compassionate behavior produces the same result.

How to read the claim
- The book’s claim: Compassion can help foster purpose, peace of mind and energy. This is the authors’ interpretation of compassion’s value.
- The community story: Satyarthi presents the Sanjay Colony initiative as an example of children and adults working together. Its reported changes are not independently evaluated in the excerpt.
- The biological finding: A retreat study reported higher telomerase activity in one group at the end of an intensive three-month program. It does not establish an anti-aging effect or isolate compassion as the cause.
For readers interested in the original argument, the excerpt identifies the book as The Book of Compassion by the Dalai Lama, Kailash Satyarthi and Pooja Pande. Confirm the edition and availability with a bookseller before purchasing.
