The nine options below range from community feeds and shared fictional worlds to literary magazines and classic public-domain books. Most let you browse without paying; some also offer paid ebooks, subscriptions, or audio. “Free” here means that stories or substantial archives are available online, not that every format or issue is free.

Where to read internet horror and community fiction
1. r/NoSleep: immersive first-person horror
r/NoSleep is a strong starting point for diary entries, survival accounts, found documents, missing-person narratives and multipart series. Stories are commonly framed as if they happened to the narrator. The community’s immersive convention asks readers to respond within the fiction’s premise; it is a storytelling device, not verification that an account is true. An academic discussion describes the community as a rule-bound immersive horror space: ACL Anthology paper.
For older, well-received material, sort by Top and choose a longer time period; use recent posts when you want new submissions. If you dislike cliffhangers, look for completed series or browse an author’s posts. It is a user-run Reddit community rather than an edited magazine, so standards, visibility and availability vary. Posts may be removed, edited or pushed down by newer submissions, and stories can include graphic or otherwise distressing themes. Check any content notes and community rules before reading or participating.
2. Creepypasta.com: folklore-style scares
Creepypasta.com collects creepypasta, paranormal encounters, urban legends and original horror fiction. Its archive is easier to browse at your own pace than a fast-moving social feed, and it includes both short pieces and longer stories. Use categories or search terms if you have a particular mood in mind instead of relying only on the newest page.
#1 Best Overall
- Horizontal Design and Eye Protection: With a unique horizontal head design, it can provide you a wider lighting range and sufficient lighting, allowing you to fully enjoy your reading time. The uniform soft shadow-free light can greatly protect your eyes
- 3 Colors and 5 Brightness Levels:Equipped with 3 color temperatures: Mixed Light (3400K),White Light (6000K),Amber Light (1800K), short press the button to easily switch the color mode;5 levels of brightness can meet the lighting needs of different scenarios
- 360° Flexible Neck and Clipable Design: 360° bendable gooseneck can be rotated to any angle you want for easy storage and portability. The clip with non-slip pads holds it firmly on e-readers, books, bookshelves and anywhere else without fear of slipping
- USB C Rechargeable: Built-in 1200 mAh high-capacity battery, powered by the most popular Type-C port, supports repeated charging and provides you with up to 12-90 hours continuous lighting reading time. (A Type-C cable is included)
- Lightweight and Portable: Its compact size and flexible design makes it easy to carry and store in your backpack without taking up too much space. Whether you're on the go or at home, this is a great choice for nighttime reading
“Creepypasta” names a broad kind of internet horror, not a quality rating or a promise that a story is true. The archive brings together different styles and levels of polish, so quantity should not be mistaken for editorial consistency. Stories may imitate eyewitness accounts or urban legends, but that framing alone does not establish them as factual.
3. SCP Wiki: horror inside a shared fictional universe
The SCP Wiki presents much of its fiction as case files, research notes, interviews and incident reports about anomalous objects or events. Its collaborative universe blends horror with science fiction and other speculative modes; entries can be terrifying, comic, philosophical or sentimental. Community voting and curated reading paths can help surface popular work, but votes are not the same as professional editing.
Random browsing can be a steep introduction because articles may refer to site terminology, recurring concepts or other entries. Start with the official newcomer guide or the creepypasta archive, then follow links when you want more context. The site is free to browse; writing and community participation are different from simply reading.
4. r/shortscarystories: a scare in a few minutes
r/shortscarystories focuses on compact horror, often built around one unsettling premise, an unreliable narrator or a final-line reversal. It suits a short break better than the longer serial style common on r/NoSleep.

- 360° Flexible & Portable Neck: The 360° bendable gooseneck can be rotated to any angle and folded at will for easy storage and portability. Clips with non-slip pads holds it securely on e-readers, books, shelves and anywhere else without fear of slipping.
The trade-off is compression: very short fiction may favor a clever reveal over atmosphere or developed characters, and community-submitted quality varies. Some posts are macabre or disturbing without being especially frightening. Check the community’s current rules and any content notes, particularly if you plan to submit or want to avoid specific themes.
Where to find edited contemporary horror
5. Nightmare Magazine: polished horror and dark fantasy
Nightmare Magazine publishes original horror and dark-fantasy fiction alongside flash fiction, poetry, interviews, reviews and nonfiction. Its magazine format gives you a more edited alternative to open community feeds, with a range that includes psychological horror, haunted houses, zombies and other dark fiction. Online stories are free to read; ebook editions and subscriptions are optional ways to read issues and support the publication.
Browse the issue archive for published fiction rather than expecting a continuous stream of amateur submissions. The magazine’s support page explains its free online reading and paid support model. On August 16, 2026, the site listed individual ebook issues at $3.99, with ebook subscriptions at $17.96 for six months, $33.52 for 12 months and $62.24 for 24 months; prices can change. Its archive listed Issue 166, July 2026. Check the live ebook and subscription pages for current terms.
6. The Dark Magazine: literary horror and dark fantasy
The Dark publishes horror and dark fantasy, including genre-crossing work involving folklore, weird fiction and the supernatural. Its issue archive offers a structured way to browse, and the July 2026 issue is described as containing dark fantasy and horror.

- 360° Flexible Neck and Sturdy Clip: 360° bendable gooseneck can be rotated to any angle you want. Anti-skid clip design makes it securely clamp on e-readers, books, shelves and anywhere else without worrying about leaving marks, scratches or moving
- Light and Portable: Small size and flexible design makes it easy to carry and store in a backpack without taking up space. Whether you are on the go or at home, the stepless dimming book light will be a great choice for your night reading
It is a better fit for readers open to literary or slow-building fiction than for someone seeking only quick internet scares. Access can differ by story and issue, so check whether a particular piece is available in full online or through a digital issue. The magazine’s subscription page lists current options; no single stable price is stated here.
7. Reactor: horror among broader speculative fiction
Reactor publishes fiction and nonfiction across science fiction, fantasy, horror and related genres. It is useful if you enjoy unsettling speculative stories, monsters, weird fiction and dark fantasy alongside more conventional horror. Browse its fiction section or use site search to narrow the broader catalog. For one example, “Wait for Night” by Stephen Graham Jones is a horror-related story available on the site.
Because horror is only one strand of its coverage, Reactor is less targeted than Nightmare or The Dark. It is a useful wider net, not a dedicated scary-story archive.
Where to read classic horror—and where to listen
8. Project Gutenberg: public-domain classics
Project Gutenberg offers free access to older books and story collections whose works are public domain under the applicable rules. Search by author or title, or browse the horror catalog search for gothic, ghost, supernatural and weird fiction. Depending on the work, formats can include HTML, plain text and EPUB, which are useful for reading in a browser or on an ebook reader.

- Stepless Dimming and 3 Color Modes: Adjust the brightness from 100% to 10% by long press button to suit different reading environment. Simple switch 3 color temperature lighting modes by clicking the button: mixed color, cool white, warm
- Eye Protecting Reading Light: No flicker, no shadow, no dizzy light. Provide a natural and soft light which won’t strain your eyes even after long hours of use. Enjoy your reading time without disturbing your partner or roommate
- 1000 mAh Battery: Built-in 1000 mAh battery only takes about 2.5 hours to get a full charge and support up to 80 hours lighting at lowest brightness. 4 LED indicator lights will always show the remaining power of the light
- 360° Flexible Neck & Sturdy Clip: 360° bendable goose neck can be rotated to any angle you want. Anti-skid clip design makes it firmly clamp on an e-reader, books, shelf, etc
- Portable and Widely Use: Lightweight and sturdy book light can stand independently with the anti-slip pad on the bottom. Free your hands to enjoy bedtime reading, working, traveling, camping etc
The catalog is not a contemporary horror feed, and a search can return novels, poetry, essays and nonfiction as well as short stories. Copyright status depends on jurisdiction and edition: a public-domain original does not necessarily make a modern translation, introduction, annotations or artwork free of copyright. Project Gutenberg’s terms of use provide U.S.-focused guidance and explain the site’s conditions; do not assume a title’s status is identical in every country.
9. Pseudopod: an audio-first alternative
Pseudopod is included for readers whose real goal is a scary story they can enjoy away from a screen. It presents narrated horror fiction in anthology-style episodes, using performance and audio pacing rather than a page-first reading experience. Access to full text varies by episode and rights arrangement, so check an individual episode if you need a transcript.
If you specifically want written stories, choose one of the text archives or magazines above instead. Pseudopod is a listening option, not a substitute for a searchable text library.

What to know before you settle in
Fiction can be written to look real
Confessional language, documents and eyewitness-style narration are common horror techniques. They make a story immersive, but do not establish that its events happened. This distinction matters especially on r/NoSleep and in creepypasta archives.

Popular, curated and professionally edited are different things
Community votes can help you find work readers have liked; they do not mean a magazine editor selected or copyedited it. Open archives offer volume, while magazine issues provide a more editorially selected experience. Project Gutenberg’s strength is access to classic works, not current magazine curation.
Check for themes you would rather avoid
Horror can include graphic violence, sexual violence, abuse, self-harm, suicide, body horror, animal cruelty and other distressing subjects. Community posts may have uneven warning practices. Look for tags, author notes, content warnings and current community rules when available; fiction is not automatically emotionally safe.
Browsing without an account
Reddit generally allows people to read public communities without signing in, while voting, saving and other personalized features require an account. SCP and magazine sites generally allow browsing without registration; subscriptions and purchases require their own steps. Project Gutenberg offers downloads without a paid membership. Site interfaces and access policies can change, so treat these as practical browsing expectations rather than permanent guarantees.
Stories may not stay where you found them
Community posts can be edited, removed or buried. If stable access matters, prefer publication archives or public-domain ebook files where available. Magazine archives and rights arrangements can also change, so check the individual story or issue page when returning to a saved link.
