Samsung News added a dedicated Sports tab and a Yahoo Finance-powered stock-market module in an update announced on October 1, 2025. Samsung said the features were for English-language users in the United States and Canada on Galaxy smartphones and tablets released from 2023 onward. They bring scores, sports coverage, market information and financial headlines into Samsung’s news service—but “live” does not mean game streaming or stock trading.
What Samsung added
A dedicated Sports tab
The Sports tab brings together scores, schedules, standings and statistics, with options to follow specific teams and sports. Samsung also described written and video sports coverage through Yahoo Sports content. Its announcement refers to coverage from “top sports leagues” but does not name the leagues or specify that every sport receives the same depth of coverage. Samsung’s October 2025 announcement is the source for the feature description.
A Yahoo Finance-powered market module
The finance area displays market information, including major U.S. indices, alongside financial headlines curated from multiple news sources. Yahoo Finance supplies the integrated finance content and data described by Samsung. The announcement does not enumerate supported exchanges, securities, quote types or asset classes, so the module should be understood as a market snapshot rather than a complete market-data service.
What “live” means—and what it does not
Samsung describes up-to-the-minute sports and financial information. That supports an expectation of scores and market updates within a news app, not a guarantee of instant refresh or a particular data delay: Samsung published no latency figure or service-level guarantee in the partnership announcement.

The announcement does not promise live game broadcasts, full sports broadcasting rights, betting or prediction-market tools, brokerage accounts, stock or ETF trading, or personalized investment advice. It also does not establish that every article, score, statistic or market field comes exclusively from Yahoo. Samsung specifically describes the financial headlines as a curated stream from a variety of news sources.
For a consequential market decision, check the displayed timestamp and refresh behavior, then verify the information with the underlying Yahoo or other source. Samsung News is not a substitute for a broker’s execution data or a professional market-data terminal.

Who can use the features
Samsung announced availability in English for users in the United States and Canada on Galaxy smartphones and tablets released from 2023 onward. In a May 5, 2026 follow-up, Samsung still described Yahoo-powered sports and finance updates as part of Samsung News and repeated that availability statement.
That announced range is not a guarantee for every device variant. Samsung warns that News availability can depend on country, carrier and model; software version and rollout status may matter as well. Samsung said additional languages and territories would follow, but the cited announcements do not confirm broader availability. Outside the U.S. and Canada, check local Samsung support or the app on your device rather than assuming the modules are available.

How to open Samsung News and manage topics
- Swipe right from the Home screen to open Samsung News, if the service is enabled on your device.
- In Samsung News, open the three-dot More options menu and tap Settings.
- Tap Manage news topics to review and select available subjects, such as Sports. Samsung documents this access and customization route in its U.S. support instructions.
Samsung’s support pages explain how to open News and manage topics, but do not document one universal screen path for opening the new Sports tab or stock-market module. Labels and module placement may differ by software release, region and device. If a feature is missing, check the Galaxy Store for Samsung News or Samsung Free updates, and confirm News is enabled on the Home screen. If it remains absent, the device, carrier, region or rollout may not support it; an update cannot be guaranteed to resolve that.
Samsung News is an expansion, not a new Yahoo app
The Yahoo integration is part of Samsung News, Samsung’s curated news service; it is not a merger, acquisition or rebranding of Yahoo Sports or Yahoo Finance. Samsung News grew out of Samsung Free, and Samsung says it originally launched the News service in the U.S. in 2023. On supported devices, people who still see Samsung Free may need its update to access the News experience. Samsung’s Samsung News overview describes the service and its history.

Samsung News or a standalone Yahoo app?
| What you need | Samsung News integration | Standalone service |
|---|---|---|
| Quick scores, headlines or a broad view of major indices | Convenient for a glance alongside regular news | Also available, but requires opening Yahoo’s separate service |
| More detailed sports coverage | Coverage is presented within Samsung News; the announcement does not establish every league or feature | Yahoo Sports is the better fit for a dedicated sports experience; its separate service is at sports.yahoo.com |
| Market research beyond a snapshot | The announced module offers market information and financial headlines; its full data scope is not specified | Yahoo Finance separately lists premium research tools such as advanced charts, screeners, historical data and filings on its plans page. Those tools are not established as part of Samsung News. |
| Trading | Not provided | Yahoo Finance is informational; trading requires a brokerage service |
Samsung News is most useful for people who want fewer app switches: casual sports followers checking a score between headlines, or market watchers who want broad context without opening a dedicated finance app. Dedicated services are a better fit for fantasy features, deeper league coverage, advanced research or tools that go beyond general market awareness.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the integration is worth using
- Good fit: Galaxy owners in the announced markets who want scores, followed teams, market direction and related headlines in one news destination.
- Limited fit: People who need comprehensive sports coverage or advanced financial research; the announcement does not establish those capabilities in Samsung News.
- Not a reason by itself to buy a Galaxy device: Samsung News is a convenience feature, and other news, sports and finance apps are available across devices. Samsung’s support page says Samsung News is available without a subscription fee, but that does not imply that separate Yahoo products or premium tools are included. See Samsung’s service overview.
When scores or market data are missing or seem delayed
- Confirm that the device is a Galaxy phone or tablet released from 2023 onward and that it is being used in the U.S. or Canada in English, matching Samsung’s announced rollout.
- Check for Samsung News or Samsung Free updates in the Galaxy Store, then make sure Samsung News is enabled on the Home screen.
- Review the available topics and modules in Samsung News settings; the exact module layout may vary.
- For market data that appears stale, check its timestamp and refresh behavior, then compare it with the relevant source before acting.
- If the section remains unavailable, treat it as a possible model, carrier, regional or rollout limitation rather than assuming there is a settings fix.
This is a Samsung News mobile and tablet feature. It should not be confused with Samsung TV Plus or a promise of live television streaming.
