If a TV show is missing from Plex, first check the library path and the show-and-episode naming, then run Scan Library Files. Plex identifies TV episodes from their folder structure and filenames; refreshing metadata will not find a file the scanner has not recognized. Plex calls naming the biggest reason content is not found, but also lists path access, exclusions, unsupported content, and incomplete copies as possible causes. Plex’s troubleshooting guide
Start with the symptom
- The show is completely absent: Check the library type and path, scan status, filename, permissions, exclusions, and file format.
- The show appears, but some episodes do not: Check episode numbering, season folders, unusual episode orders, archives, and whether files have finished copying.
- The show and episodes appear, but the title or details are wrong: Use Fix Match or adjust the show’s episode order. This is a metadata-matching issue, not a failure to find the files.
Try the fastest safe fix
- Confirm that the Plex library is a TV Shows library and points to the folder containing the show folders.
- Organize one test show using the example below, adapting the title, year, episode number, and extension to your file.
- Make sure the episode is extracted, fully copied, and not excluded.
- In Plex Web, open the TV library menu and select Scan Library Files. Menu placement can vary by version.
- If Plex finds the show but its match or episode order is wrong, use Refresh Metadata or Fix Match instead of repeatedly scanning.
Plex’s TV naming guide shows the recommended hierarchy and naming conventions.
Check the library path and type
A TV library should normally point to the parent directory containing individual show folders—not to a single episode folder and not to a broad directory mixing movies, downloads, and TV. For example:
/Media/TV Shows/
Show A/
Show B/
Show C/
In this example, select /Media/TV Shows as the library location. If shows are grouped into categories, select the appropriate parent containing those show folders, such as /Media/TV Shows/Kids. Keep movie and TV content in separate libraries; Plex warns that mixing media types can lead to incorrect classification or ignored files. See Plex’s folder and naming guidance.

Also verify that the library was created as TV Shows, rather than Movies or Other Videos. Plex’s scanner documentation explains that the TV scanner uses filenames and directory structure to identify episodes and their season and episode numbers. For ordinary TV collections, use the current Plex TV Series scanner and agent rather than switching to a legacy scanner as a first troubleshooting step.
Use recognizable show, season, and episode names
For conventional season-based shows, a reliable pattern is a show folder, a season folder, and an episode filename containing an SxxEyy marker:
/TV Shows/
Show Name (Year)/
Season 01/
Show Name (Year) - S01E01 - Episode Title.mkv
Show Name (Year) - S01E02 - Episode Title.mkv
Include the show’s release year in the show folder and filename when using the Plex TV Series agent. The season directory should use the word Season, such as Season 01. Dots, spaces, or dashes around the episode marker are generally less important than a recognizable show name and clear season and episode numbers.
A folder such as /Downloads/New.Show.720p/ with a file named episode1.mkv gives Plex little reliable information to identify the series or episode. Rename one file and scan again as a test before making broad changes.

Check the correct episode order
Not every program follows ordinary season numbering. News and talk shows may be organized by date; anime may use absolute numbering or different season conventions; specials may belong in Season 00; and a series may have aired, DVD, or absolute episode orders. Match your files to the order used by the metadata source for that show. Plex documents options including TMDB Aired, TheTVDB Aired, TheTVDB DVD, and TheTVDB Absolute. Check the show’s listing on TMDB or TheTVDB if its numbering is unclear, then set the matching order in Plex.
Handle multiple episodes in one file carefully
A filename can identify multiple episodes in one video, but the naming must identify each represented episode. Plex supports stacks of up to eight parts; some features may not work correctly with split files. Joining split parts into one video is generally more reliable when practical. See Plex’s TV naming documentation.
Use provider IDs only when a title is ambiguous
For an ambiguous title, Plex supports provider IDs in curly braces in the show folder name, for example Show Name (2020) {tmdb-123456}, {tvdb-123456}, or {imdb-tt1234567}. These can improve matching, but make folder names less readable. Plex also documents .plexmatch as an alternative matching control in its naming guide.
Make sure Plex actually scans the files
In Plex Web, open the TV library’s menu and choose Scan Library Files. This checks for new or changed media. A metadata refresh is different: it updates information for items Plex already knows about. Plex describes these library operations in its URL commands documentation and library guide.

If new files do not appear automatically, check the server’s library settings at Settings → Server → Library. Relevant options include Scan my library automatically, Scan my library periodically, and Run a partial scan when changes are detected. The exact controls can vary with the Plex Web version.
Automatic detection depends on the operating system reporting filesystem changes. Network-mounted media may not provide reliable notifications, depending on the operating system and NAS configuration. For a network share, run a manual scan after adding files or enable periodic scanning rather than assuming Plex will notice each change immediately.
Check access to the folder, share, or mount
The Plex Media Server process—not just your desktop user—needs permission to traverse directories and read files. Plex specifies directory read and execute access plus file read access in its troubleshooting guide.
- Windows or macOS: Check that the account running Plex Media Server can open the folder and the media files.
- Linux: Check the server process’s user and group, directory traversal permissions, and file read permissions. The service account is often named
plex, but this is not universal. - NAS: Confirm the Plex service account has access to the shared folder.
- Docker: Confirm the host directory is mounted at the expected container path and that the container’s user can read it.
- Network share: Confirm the share is mounted and authenticated in a way the Plex server process can use.
Do not use a blanket chmod 777 as a shortcut. Grant the Plex process only the directory traversal and read access it needs. If Plex cannot browse the folder at all, verify the mount and permissions before changing filenames.

Check exclusions, unsupported content, and unfinished copies
Correctly named files can still be ignored. Before renaming a large collection, check these common causes:
- Exclusions: Look for a
.plexignorefile or a special exclusion keyword in a filename or directory. Plex documents these and other reasons content may be skipped in its content-not-found guide. - Archives: Extract ZIP, RAR, GZIP, TAR, or similar archives. Plex does not scan the video inside an archive as an ordinary TV episode.
- Disk images: ISO, IMG, VIDEO_TS, BDMV, and similar disk-image content is not supported for ordinary Plex Media Server scanning.
- Incomplete copies: Wait until a file transfer finishes before scanning. When media is copied directly into a library location, Plex may notice the change while the file is still being written.
- Extension and file type: Check that the file is an extracted video in a format Plex can handle, rather than an archive or disk image with a misleading name.
Fix a wrong match or missing metadata
If the show and episodes are visible, but Plex has chosen the wrong series, open the show’s context menu and choose Fix Match. Search using the exact title and year; a provider ID in the folder name can help distinguish similarly named shows. If the match is right but artwork or details are stale, use Refresh Metadata from the show’s menu.
If episodes are assigned to the wrong numbers or order, change the episode-order preference for that show to match the way the files are organized. Refreshing metadata may help Plex display the chosen order, but it does not correct filenames or discover files it cannot scan. Plex lists its episode-order options in the TV naming guide.
Advanced recovery when basic checks fail
Use logs to locate an access or scan failure
If the path, structure, permissions, exclusions, and manual scan all check out, collect the Plex Media Server logs and look for errors around the time of the scan. Note the server operating system, whether Plex is installed natively or in Docker, on a NAS, or in a VM, the exact library path, one complete example filename, whether Plex can browse the folder, and whether other shows in the same location work. Also note whether the files are local or on a network share. These details help distinguish a scanner problem from a mount or access failure.

Use the library URL command only if you know your server details
Advanced users can call Plex’s documented library refresh endpoint, substituting the server address, library section ID, and token:
http://[PMS_IP_ADDRESS]:32400/library/sections/[LIBRARY_ID]/refresh?X-Plex-Token=[TOKEN]
To force a metadata refresh as well:
http://[PMS_IP_ADDRESS]:32400/library/sections/[LIBRARY_ID]/refresh?force=1&X-Plex-Token=[TOKEN]
These commands require a valid library ID and Plex token. Treat the token like a password: do not share it or expose it in logs, screenshots, or public links. The Plex URL commands guide explains the endpoints.
Optimize the database only for broader library changes
Database optimization is not a first-line remedy for a single missing show. Plex describes Settings → Troubleshooting → Optimize Database as maintenance for unused or fragmented data, including after large library changes. It will not fix a wrong path, inaccessible files, bad naming, or unsupported content. See Plex’s troubleshooting tools.
Consider local NFO metadata for obscure or personal shows
For content that is poorly indexed online, Plex’s NFO Agent can use local NFO metadata files. Plex’s documentation, retrieved August 18, 2026, specifies Plex Media Server version 1.43.1 or newer. This is an advanced metadata option, not a solution to an absent or unreadable file; the NFO agent also has limitations, including unavailable music support and unsupported local extras. See Plex’s NFO metadata guide.
