It is not an open voice-cloning service: ACX describes it as a limited, invitation-based beta with U.S.-specific eligibility rules. Participating narrators can consider projects title by title, review and edit generated narration, and choose among several compensation structures—but they should also understand the agreement’s limits on eligibility, cancellation, deletion and recording-data use.
What Audible and ACX announced
In September 2024, Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX) announced a limited beta in which invited narrators could provide recordings for ACX to create a replica of their own voice. Rights holders could then consider that replica for eligible audiobook productions. Audible presented the program as a way to expand audiobook availability, including for books that might not otherwise receive audio editions. ACX’s announcement describes the initial invitation and the basic workflow.
The phrase “train AI” can suggest that a narrator’s voice is being added to a general-purpose model. ACX’s public material instead describes creating a voice replica from recordings supplied by that narrator. It does not disclose the model architecture, training method, dataset size or technical safeguards, so those details should not be inferred.
This is also distinct from ACX’s separate KDP Virtual Voice opportunity. Both involve AI-related audiobook production, but they are not the same program; ACX distinguishes them in its 2025 review.

How the narrator workflow works
The published setup instructions are for invited beta participants, not a public application route. ACX’s participant help page outlines these steps:
- Accept the invitation through the welcome email.
- Open the narrator profile’s Edit Profile page, find Available Voices and select the Voice Replica Narration beta option.
- Test the recording setup; ACX estimates this check takes about one minute.
- Download ACX’s scripts and record them. ACX estimates recording takes about 2.5 hours.
- Upload the recordings and wait for ACX to generate the replica. The help page says this may take several weeks.
- Review and approve the replica when ACX notifies you that it is ready.
Those time estimates are ACX’s guidance, not a guaranteed completion schedule. The public materials do not specify a microphone or recording-software brand as mandatory.
Who can participate—and where
The beta began as a U.S.-only invitation. Current ACX materials still describe a limited program, and the participant terms add restrictions beyond general U.S. residency. Under the published terms, the producer must be at least 18, be an individual creating a replica of their own voice, and cannot subcontract the voice-replica work. The terms identify residents of Colorado, Illinois, Texas and Washington as excluded; they also address people physically located in those states while conducting relevant activities.

These are program terms, not a blanket statement about where finished audiobooks can be heard. ACX says replica titles may be distributed in eligible Audible marketplaces it serves during the beta. A restricted participant geography can therefore coexist with broader title distribution. Check the live terms before relying on eligibility, since a limited beta’s rules can change.
Who chooses a project, and who edits the narration?
Narrators can pursue projects using their human performance, their replica, or both, and ACX describes decisions as title by title. A narrator can accept or reject an offer; agreeing to create a replica does not mean accepting every later project. Rights holders can browse or listen to samples and make an offer, including directly without an audition, under the expanded workflow ACX announced in July 2025.
A replica does not remove the narrator from production. The narrator reviews generated chapters and can use ACX production tools to address pronunciation, pacing, pauses and related delivery issues. The rights holder can review the delivered audiobook chapter by chapter. This is quality-control and editing work, not the same as manually recording every line.

- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
That distinction matters for books with unfamiliar names, technical terms, foreign-language passages, distinctive character voices or demanding dramatic timing. ACX identifies pronunciation and pacing as areas for review, but its public materials do not provide independent quality benchmarks or establish how well replicas handle every style of performance.
How narrators are paid
ACX’s July 9, 2025 update expanded the options beyond the initial description. Depending on the title’s deal, compensation can be a per-finished-hour fee, royalty share, or hybrid royalty-share-plus arrangement. The per-finished-hour rate is negotiated by the producer and rights holder at the start of production; ACX does not publish a universal standard rate.
| Deal structure | What ACX says | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Per-finished-hour | Rate negotiated by the producer and rights holder at the beginning of production. | Whether the negotiated fee compensates for recording setup, review, editing and any other required work. |
| Royalty share | For the initial seven-year distribution period, ACX lists narrator shares of 10% under the legacy rate or 12.5% under the new rate; the corresponding author/rightsholder shares are 30% or 37.5%. | Income depends on the contract and the title’s sales or listening performance; a share is not a guaranteed payment. |
| Hybrid royalty-share-plus | Combines a payment with a royalty share. | Compare the negotiated payment and continuing share against the work required and the title’s likely performance. |
The percentages are contractual royalty-share figures ACX describes for the initial seven-year distribution period, not universal take-home earnings. The deal, exclusivity and title performance affect what a participant actually receives. The rate and full terms should be confirmed in the specific offer.

Consent, deletion and recording-data use
ACX says it will not separately use a narrator’s replica for commercial purposes without that narrator’s approval. The narrator also has a mechanism to request deletion of the replica. Those protections should not be read as unlimited control over every recording or every active production: deletion is subject to contractual conditions, including continuing production arrangements. Read the operative agreement before accepting an invitation.
There is a separate data-use issue. ACX’s help material says submitted recording data may be referenced and used to continue developing the technology that makes voice replicas possible. That statement is distinct from commercial publication of the replica. The public-facing material does not fully explain the technical scope, retention period or safeguards for that continued development use.
What rights holders and listeners should know
For authors and publishers
Rights holders can browse voice samples in ACX’s Find Voices experience, select a preferred replica and send an offer. The production includes narrator review and rights-holder chapter review, followed by ACX quality assurance before publication, according to the rights-holder help page. During the beta, the rights holder can cancel within seven days after receiving the audiobook. The narrator can cancel the production contract within seven days of accepting an offer, subject to the contract. These beta cancellation windows differ from ACX’s ordinary production process, which uses a 15-minute checkpoint.

Before choosing a replica, consider the book’s performance demands, the likely pronunciation and pacing corrections, the contract’s compensation structure, the review schedule and the cancellation terms. For character-heavy fiction, memoir, poetry or other work dependent on subtle interpretation, a live human performance may be a better fit. A replica may be worth considering for other projects, but the available documentation does not establish that it is invariably faster, cheaper or equivalent in quality to human narration.
For listeners
ACX says replica-narrated titles are labeled in the narrator field on Audible and Amazon product pages with wording such as “Narrated by [Narrator’s] voice replica.” The credit connects the title to the professional narrator whose voice was replicated, but it does not mean that person necessarily performed every passage live. The cited material establishes the narrator-field label, not that every screen or storefront presents an equally prominent disclosure.
What the beta does—and does not—establish
ACX’s stated case is that replicas can help participating narrators pursue more projects and expand the audiobook catalog. The arrangement keeps the narrator involved in project choices and quality review, but it also raises legitimate questions about labor, artistic standards and voice rights. A synthetic option could compete with some human narration work; the available materials do not establish the scale of that effect or prove that jobs have been eliminated.
- For narrators: weigh the negotiated payment against review and correction work, check project-by-project consent, understand the deletion terms, and consider how replica titles may affect your professional identity.
- For rights holders: check title eligibility and distribution terms, compare compensation models, plan for pronunciation review, and use the beta’s review and cancellation windows deliberately.
- For listeners: look for the voice-replica credit and assess the performance on the finished title rather than assuming the named narrator recorded it in person.
ACX’s public documentation does not identify the model provider, publish objective comparisons with human narration, or report the number of participants, completed titles, total compensation or listener-satisfaction results. Those unknowns limit what can responsibly be claimed about technical quality and the program’s industry-wide impact.
Where the program stands
The initiative has moved beyond its September 2024 invitation: ACX’s July 2025 update added payment choices, direct offers and explicit title labeling. But ACX help pages continue to describe voice-replica production as a limited beta, with invitation-based participation and contractual eligibility restrictions. It is not an unrestricted cloning feature for every narrator.
