Bill Gates announced his first memoir, Source Code, on June 4, 2024. Published in the United States on February 4, 2025, the book looks back at his Seattle childhood, early fascination with computers, decision to leave Harvard, and partnership with Paul Allen as Microsoft began. “My Beginnings” is the subtitle in U.S. publisher listings, not a separate book.

What is Source Code about?

Gates presents the memoir as an origin story: a personal account of the experiences and relationships that preceded his public career. The narrative moves from his childhood in Seattle through school, his growing interest in computing, Harvard, and the early formation of Microsoft. The emphasis is on how he became the person who made those choices, rather than on a comprehensive account of everything that followed.

In his June 2024 announcement, Gates described the book as covering his early life, his decision to leave Harvard, and the founding of Microsoft with Paul Allen. He said he had rarely written about his personal story and wanted to examine the people and circumstances that shaped it. Gates’s announcement and his later essay about the memoir provide his own framing.

Which parts of Gates’s life does it cover?

Seattle childhood, family, and school

The memoir considers Gates’s family environment and his relationships with parents, teachers, friends, and mentors. It also addresses his experience as an unusually driven child who could be difficult and sometimes felt isolated or misunderstood. These personal details give context to the intensity and ambition that later became associated with his work.

Computers, friendships, and formative loss

Gates traces his early access to computers and his growing commitment to programming. The account also includes the people around him during those years, including close friend Kent Evans, whose death during high school was a formative loss. The Associated Press’s coverage discusses these themes alongside Gates’s early ventures, including Traf-O-Data. The AP’s report also describes Gates’s reported reflections on traits that he believes might have led to an autism diagnosis had he been assessed as a child. That retrospective speculation is not evidence of a formal diagnosis.

Harvard, Paul Allen, and Microsoft’s beginnings

The book follows Gates through Harvard and his partnership with Paul Allen, setting Microsoft’s beginnings against earlier programming opportunities and business experiments. Gates and Allen co-founded Microsoft in 1975. The memoir is about the buildup to that moment and the company’s early period, not a detailed history of its later products or corporate controversies.

What the memoir does—and does not—set out to do

Source Code is Gates’s first memoir, but it is not a complete autobiography. Its center of gravity is his formative years and the creation of Microsoft. The publisher says the book is not primarily about Microsoft as a corporation, the Gates Foundation, or the future of technology. Readers looking for a full account of Windows, Office, antitrust litigation, Gates’s later executive career, philanthropy, or contemporary technology policy should not treat this book as a substitute for those histories and accounts.

That limited scope is also the book’s distinctive promise: Microsoft’s origin is approached through childhood, education, friendship, loss, and access to technology, rather than as a stand-alone corporate chronology. Readers interested in how those circumstances shaped Gates may find that more useful than a comprehensive survey of the company.

U.S. editions and publication details

The original announcement in 2024 referred to a planned February 2025 publication. The U.S. hardcover appeared on February 4, 2025, from Knopf. A Vintage paperback followed on February 3, 2026. The formats differ in page count and identifiers, so check the edition rather than relying on title alone.

The publisher’s U.S. listings give list prices of $30 for the hardcover, $20 for the paperback, and $32 for large print; retailer prices and availability can differ. The audiobook listing identifies Bill Gates and Wil Wheaton as narrators. Google Play displayed a promotional audiobook price of $14.95 against $22.50 when its listing was retrieved, so those figures should not be treated as a current or universal price. Use the publisher’s edition page to check formats, and compare current storefront listings for digital editions. The Google Play audiobook listing provides audio details.

For U.S. readers, the paperback is the lower-list-price standard print option; large print is a separate, longer edition. Ebook and audiobook prices depend on the retailer. Library borrowing may also be possible, with availability and wait times determined by the local library. International editions can have different publishers, ISBNs, currencies, and publication dates; for example, the Australian listing is from Penguin Australia. Check the regional edition if buying outside the United States.

How has the book been positioned?

Penguin Random House labels Source Code a No. 1 New York Times bestseller. Its book page also presents selected review praise, describing the memoir in terms such as candid and personal. Those are publisher-presented claims and excerpts, not proof of universal critical agreement. The publisher’s listing contains its format information and selected reviews.

The book’s relevance for documentary and technology readers lies in its personal account of an origin story: how a particular childhood, education, circle of friends, and early access to computers fed into a consequential business partnership. It offers Gates’s perspective, rather than an independent corporate history, and its limited time span should guide expectations.
