Spotify works on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. For most desktop users, install the verified Spotify Snap through App Center or run sudo snap install spotify; choose Spotify’s official APT repository if you specifically prefer Debian packages. One important caveat: Spotify says its Linux client is not actively supported, and its experience may differ from the Windows and macOS apps.

Choose an installation method

Method Best for What to know
App Center / Snap Most Ubuntu 24.04 desktop users Simple graphical installation or one command; Spotify is listed in the Snap Store for Ubuntu 24.04 with a verified publisher. Snap packages are generally sandboxed and update automatically. Spotify on the Snap Store; Ubuntu’s Snap and deb package guidance.
Spotify’s official APT repository Users who prefer conventional Debian packages and APT Spotify supplies the repository instructions, but adding it means trusting a third-party repository with software updates. Debian packages have unrestricted access to system resources. Spotify’s Linux instructions; Ubuntu’s repository guidance.
Web Player Users who want no installation, or whose hardware or client has problems Runs in a browser without adding a package or repository: open Spotify Web Player. Desktop integrations may differ from the installed app.
Flatpak Users who knowingly want a community-maintained alternative Spotify’s official Linux page does not list Flatpak as an official installation method. Ubuntu setup requires additional Flatpak and Flathub configuration; see Flathub’s Ubuntu setup instructions.

Spotify’s official Linux page provides Ubuntu installation instructions and says its Debian package aims to work with the latest Ubuntu LTS release. That makes Ubuntu 24.04 an intended target, not a promise of active support or compatibility with every device. The page does not give a complete Linux architecture matrix; on ARM hardware, check whether a compatible package is available or use the Web Player. These directions are for a graphical desktop, not a headless server.

Ubuntu 24.04 calls its graphical software store App Center. Older guides and Spotify’s page may say “Ubuntu Software.”

Install from App Center

  1. Open App Center from the applications menu.
  2. Search for Spotify and select the listing published by Spotify or the verified publisher.
  3. Click Install and authenticate if Ubuntu prompts you.
  4. Open Spotify from the applications menu after installation.

If you do not see the listing, try the Snap command below. Spotify’s Linux instructions also suggest searching in Ubuntu Software if a direct link does not open.

Install the recommended Snap from a terminal

Ubuntu 24.04 normally includes Snap support. Install Spotify with:

sudo snap install spotify

Check that it is installed and see the version available to your system:

snap list spotify
snap info spotify

Launch it from the applications menu, or run spotify in a terminal if the menu entry is missing. Snap applications update automatically; to request an update check, run sudo snap refresh spotify.

If the terminal says snap: command not found, install Snap support, then log out and back in (or reboot) before retrying:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapd

For more detail, see Snapcraft’s Ubuntu installation instructions.

Install Spotify from its official APT repository

Use this route if you prefer a Debian package managed through APT or avoid Snap. These are Spotify’s published repository commands:

curl -sS https://download.spotify.com/debian/pubkey_5384CE82BA52C83A.asc | sudo gpg --dearmor --yes -o /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/spotify.gpg

echo "deb https://repository.spotify.com stable non-free" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spotify-client

Adding the source allows its owner to provide software updates to your machine. Ubuntu notes that third-party repositories are not checked by Ubuntu members; add one only if you trust its source. Spotify’s official page currently uses the key location shown above, so these commands follow that published method rather than substituting a different key configuration.

Confirm the package and repository with:

apt policy spotify-client
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

Decide between Snap and APT

  • Choose Snap for the easiest Ubuntu workflow, automatic updates, and package confinement. Confinement can affect access to files, integrations, themes, or hardware controls, and startup speed may vary by system.
  • Choose APT if you prefer the Debian package format and APT’s familiar source and package management. You take on repository maintenance, and the package has broader system access than a confined Snap.
  • Choose the Web Player if you want no local package, have unsupported hardware, or need a quick way to check whether a problem is limited to the desktop client.

Ubuntu recommends confined Snap applications where possible, while warning that third-party Debian applications have unrestricted access to system resources. Neither package format changes Spotify’s stated Linux support status.

Check which Spotify package is installed

To see whether the Snap or APT package is present:

snap list spotify
apt policy spotify-client
dpkg -l | grep -i spotify

A result from both Snap and dpkg may indicate that both formats are installed. Keeping both can create duplicate launchers, separate configuration or cache locations, and uncertainty about which version opens. Remove one package format and log out and back in if an old launcher remains visible.

Troubleshoot installation and launch problems

Spotify does not appear in App Center

Refresh Snap information and search from the terminal:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

sudo snap refresh
snap find spotify

If the listing appears, install with sudo snap install spotify. If the snap command is unavailable, follow the Snap setup steps above. App Center search behavior can vary on customized installations and Ubuntu flavors.

APT reports a key or signature error

Check that the repository and key files exist and are readable:

ls -l /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/spotify.gpg
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

Then follow Spotify’s official key and repository commands again. Do not bypass signature verification or substitute a key from an unrelated forum post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

APT reports duplicate Spotify sources

Find Spotify entries in the usual APT source locations:

grep -Rni spotify /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d 2>/dev/null

Remove or disable obsolete duplicate source files, then run sudo apt update. If you previously added another Spotify source or key, check it before reinstalling.

The app installs but will not launch

Run spotify in a terminal and note any error output. Check the relevant package with snap list spotify or apt policy spotify-client. If both package formats are installed, remove one and test again.

Window or graphics problems under Wayland

Ubuntu 24.04 commonly uses GNOME on Wayland, but there is no universal fix for Spotify rendering or title-bar problems: results can depend on the app build, driver, desktop environment, and session. Update Ubuntu and Spotify, then test an Ubuntu on Xorg session by logging out and choosing it at the login screen. You can also try the Web Player to see whether the problem is specific to the desktop client. Avoid treating undocumented launch flags as a permanent fix.

No sound or the wrong output device

In Ubuntu, open Settings → Sound and select the intended output. For command-line checks, use:

pactl get-default-sink
pactl list short sinks

If using Bluetooth, confirm the device is connected and selected as the output. Test another app to see whether audio fails system-wide or only in Spotify.

Local files do not appear

Spotify streaming and access to local files are separate. Snap confinement can affect access to locations outside normal home-folder permissions, and local-file behavior may differ between Snap and APT. To inspect the Snap’s available connections, run snap connections spotify. Do not connect interfaces indiscriminately; grant access only when you understand why it is needed.

The client is still broken

Spotify describes its Linux client as a “labor of love,” says the platform is not actively supported, and warns that the experience can differ from other desktop clients. Check the Spotify Community Desktop Linux board, consult the official Linux page, or use the Web Player.

Is Premium required to use Spotify on Ubuntu?

No. Installing the Linux app does not require a separate Linux fee or a Premium subscription. Spotify’s free tier is ad-supported; Premium offers benefits such as ad-free listening, offline listening, and higher audio quality, with features and availability varying by account and market. Do not assume Linux offline downloads or other features match Spotify’s mobile, Windows, or macOS apps.

For the United States, Spotify’s Premium page showed these prices on August 18, 2026: Individual $12.99 per month, Student $6.99 per month, Duo $18.99 per month, and Family $21.99 per month. The page also showed an offer of three months for $0 for eligible new Individual subscribers, ending September 23, 2026. Prices, taxes, plan rules, trial eligibility, and offers vary by country and account; check Spotify’s U.S. Premium page for current terms. Premium is optional and is not needed to install the Ubuntu app.

Uninstall Spotify or switch package formats

Remove the Snap

sudo snap remove spotify

Remove the APT package and Spotify source

sudo apt remove spotify-client
sudo rm -f /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list
sudo rm -f /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/spotify.gpg
sudo apt update

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These commands remove the package and the repository files shown in Spotify’s current instructions. They may not remove your user data or settings. For a full reset, inspect Spotify-related folders in your home directory and remove only the files you have identified and intend to delete; avoid broad wildcard deletion.

To switch formats, remove the existing package before installing the other one. For example, to switch from Snap to APT, run sudo snap remove spotify, then follow the APT steps above. To switch from APT to Snap, remove the package and repository as shown, then run sudo snap install spotify. Log out and back in if a stale launcher remains.
