A California federal court rejected Nhentai’s request to keep its operating entity’s identity out of public filings. The entity was later identified as X Separator LLC. In a separate ruling on April 8, 2025, the court allowed PCR Distributing’s copyright claims to proceed past the dismissal stage—but did not decide that Nhentai infringed anyone’s copyrights.
What did the court order Nhentai to disclose?
The dispute began when PCR Distributing filed PCR Distributing Co. v. John Does, No. 2:24-cv-07453-CV-AJR, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on August 30, 2024. PCR named “John Does 1-10” as the operators of Nhentai.net and alleged direct and secondary copyright infringement. Those statements were allegations in PCR’s complaint, not findings by the court. The defendants sought a protective order to keep the operating entity’s identity out of public filings. Magistrate Judge A. Joel Richlin denied the request on February 7, 2025, and temporarily stayed that decision while the defendant sought review. On April 8, District Judge Cynthia Valenzuela rejected the objection and left the denial in place. The court treated the request as one to proceed anonymously in the public record.
After that ruling, the operating entity was identified as X Separator LLC. The available material supports naming the LLC; it does not establish additional individual operator identities. April 8, 2025 order on the anonymity request · Reporting on the operator identification

Why did the judge reject anonymity?
The court concluded that the entity had not shown it was entitled to conceal its identity from the parties, the court, or the public. Judge Valenzuela wrote: “Overall, Defendant has made no showing that it is entitled to keep its identity hidden from the parties to the action, this Court, or the public, let alone a showing that the Magistrate Judge Order was clearly erroneous or contrary to law.” April 8, 2025 order
In the earlier magistrate judge ruling, the court also cited the public interest in knowing which corporate entity operated a widely accessible website and was appearing in federal court. The order’s quoted discussion referred to an estimate of around 79.38 million monthly visitors; that was an estimate used in the court’s public-interest reasoning, not a verified current traffic measurement. Did the court find Nhentai guilty of copyright infringement?
No. The disclosure decision concerned anonymity and public filings, not whether copyright infringement occurred. Separately, on April 8, 2025, the district judge denied the motion to dismiss PCR’s copyright claims. That meant PCR had pleaded enough for the case to continue at that stage; it was not a final judgment on the evidence, authorization, copyright ownership, or infringement. April 8, 2025 order on the motion to dismiss
The order applied the familiar pleading threshold: a complaint must contain enough factual matter to state a plausible claim for relief. Passing that threshold allows litigation to proceed; it does not establish that the allegations are true.

What did each side allege?
PCR Distributing’s claims
PCR’s August 2024 complaint accused the Doe defendants associated with Nhentai.net of direct and secondary copyright infringement. These are claims made by the plaintiff in its pleading, not conclusions adopted by the court. PCR’s complaint
X Separator LLC’s response
On November 26, 2025, X Separator filed an amended answer and counterclaims. It denied wrongdoing and alleged that PCR representatives had previously authorized the hosting of certain works before later reversing course. X Separator asserted fraud and negligent misrepresentation and sought damages it said exceeded $500,000. Those are counterclaim allegations, not court findings.
