Disney’s official announcement explained the show’s musical makeover, but did not state why the character’s name changed.
What is Liver Lips McGrowl’s new name?
The character is now known as Romeo McGrowl. The name was reported in coverage of the refreshed show, Country Bear Musical Jamboree, which reopened at Magic Kingdom in July 2024. The Disney Food Blog reported the name in January 2024; its July 2024 reopening report identified the character as Romeo McGrowl.
Why was the character renamed?
Disney’s reviewed official announcement does not explain the reason, so a specific motive cannot be attributed to the company based on that announcement. Disney’s Destination D23 coverage focused on the show’s planned musical direction and familiar characters, not Romeo McGrowl’s name. WDW News Today’s earlier article described the former phrase as a racial slur, but that is the outlet’s characterization—not a rationale Disney gave for the change. Its September 2023 report interpreted a new attraction poster as suggesting a rename; it was not Disney’s announcement of the new name.
How did the name change fit into the show’s refresh?
Disney announced the Country Bear Jamboree update at Destination D23 in September 2023. The plan was to have the bears reinterpret favorite Disney songs in country-music styles, with Nashville musicians involved in shaping the sound. Imagineer Chris Beatty described the musical concept: “When the show debuts, the bears will be reinterpreting favorite Disney songs in different genres of country music.” Disney also said familiar characters, including Trixie and Big Al, would remain. The quote and announcement explain the show’s musical update, not the character’s rename.
