Randy Travis and Warner Music Nashville released “Where That Came From” on May 3, 2024. Its vocal was an AI-assisted recreation built from archival Travis vocals and refined by human collaborators—not a newly recorded natural vocal performance or proof that AI restored his ability to sing.
What happened with Randy Travis’s AI-assisted single?
Warner Music Nashville described “Where That Came From” as Travis’s first new music in more than a decade. The release followed the 2013 stroke that left him with aphasia and limited speech, according to Warner Music Group’s announcement.

The song’s production used an AI-generated recreation of Travis’s voice. The distinction matters: the reporting describes how a model was used to create a vocal for this particular recording. It does not say that Travis regained the ability to sing naturally.
How was the vocal created?
According to the Associated Press account reproduced by Warner Music Group, the team created two AI voice models from archival vocals:

- One model used 12 vocal stems.
- The other used 42 stems gathered from Travis recordings made between 1985 and 2013.
A demo vocal was run through the models. Producer Kyle Lehning and engineer Casey Wood then worked on details such as phrasing and vibrato. The reported process also involved Travis and his wife, Mary Travis; Warner Music Nashville co-chair and co-president Cris Lacy; and demo vocalist James Dupré. The account therefore presents the result as a collaborative production, not an AI system making the song’s creative decisions on its own.
What does “AI gave his voice back” mean?
Lacy said, “AI for good would be giving Randy his voice back,” in Warner Music Group’s announcement. In context, the phrase describes the opportunity to create a recording that evokes Travis’s voice despite the effects of his stroke. It should not be read as a medical claim that the technology reversed his aphasia or restored his natural singing voice.

The reported 12- and 42-stem figures refer to the archival material used to build the two models. They are not measures of clinical recovery, model accuracy, or audience response.

“Where That Came From” demonstrates one use of AI voice recreation in a specific recording, with archival vocals and human production work. The account does not settle broader questions about consent, rights to source recordings, editorial control, or disclosure across the music industry. Those questions depend on the circumstances of each project; this single release cannot answer them for every AI-generated vocal.
