There is no objective winner for the coolest wrestling move name, but the best ones do more than label a maneuver: they create an image, fit a wrestler’s persona, or turn a move’s history into part of its appeal. WWE’s editorial list of 50 maneuvers supplies a strong shortlist; the picks below weigh memorable sound, imagery, character fit and naming history—not a popularity poll.

Names that sound like signatures

RKO

Randy Orton’s RKO is short, sharp and unmistakably tied to its performer: WWE says Orton modified the Ace Crusher and figuratively stamped his initials on it. The name’s compactness makes it easy to remember, while the initials turn a maneuver into a personal brand. WWE includes the RKO in its 50-maneuver feature.

Stone Cold Stunner

The Stunner’s name is blunt and immediate, and “Stone Cold” supplies the character association. WWE’s Steve Austin profile identifies the Stone Cold Stunner as a signature move. In WWE’s feature, John Cena described it as “immediate and rebellious” and said it was “perfect” for Austin. The name works because it sounds like the sudden disruption Austin’s persona promised.

Names built around an image

The Undertaker’s Tombstone

“Tombstone” carries an unmistakable association with death and finality, making it a natural fit for The Undertaker’s character. Cena told WWE: “When you have The Undertaker doing a move like the Tombstone, it just fits.” He also said the move signals that “either the match has been taken to a different level, or the match is over.” Those are observations about its presentation, not a technical definition of the maneuver.

Red Arrow

Adrian Neville’s Red Arrow suggests direction and flight without spelling out the mechanics. WWE describes it as a top-turnbuckle shooting star press with a corkscrew. The name lets the audience picture a dramatic aerial finish before needing to know how the move is performed.

Razor’s Edge

Scott Hall’s Razor’s Edge has a sharp, threatening image that also echoes his ring name. WWE says Hall created the move himself, deriving it from the powerbomb. It is a good example of a name that sells both danger and performer identity in just two words.

Frankensteiner

Scott Steiner’s Frankensteiner is memorable for its monstrous, slightly comic sound. WWE’s feature recounts Rey Mysterio’s explanation of the name and move, while noting an earlier Mexican origin for the maneuver under the name hurricanrana. That history is Mysterio’s account as told to WWE; it illustrates how a familiar name and its later associations need not tell the whole story of a move’s lineage.

Names with a story behind them

RKO, Ace Crusher and Diamond Cutter

The RKO is a reminder that a move’s best-known name and performer are not necessarily its point of origin. WWE’s move-history feature traces the Ace Crusher to John Laurinaitis, who said, “The RKO, or as I call it, the Ace Crusher, was invented back in 1987.” WWE then describes Diamond Dallas Page renaming the move the Diamond Cutter and passing it along to Orton, who made it his own as the RKO. Each name captures a different stage: a descriptive original, a branded reinvention and a performer’s initials.

The Sharpshooter

Bret “Hit Man” Hart’s Sharpshooter sounds precise and threatening—an effective fit for a technical submission and Hart’s ring persona. WWE separates the hold’s creation from its familiar English name: it credits Riki Choshu with crafting it as “Sasori-gatame,” rendered loosely by WWE as “Scorpion Hold,” and says Pat Patterson suggested “Sharpshooter” to Hart. The distinction matters: the innovator of a hold and the person who gave it its lasting name can be different people.

Names that go big on spectacle

Van Terminator

Rob Van Dam’s Van Terminator sounds deliberately outsized, like a name designed for a signature spectacle. WWE’s feature describes it in the context of a springboard chair spot and credits a WWE writer with naming many of Van Dam’s moves. That is historical match context, not an instruction: do not attempt wrestling moves or chair spots outside a properly supervised professional setting.

Air Bourne

Evan Bourne’s Air Bourne is a soaring pun built around the performer’s name. WWE describes it as Bourne’s name for the Shooting Star Press. It is less ominous than the Tombstone and less forceful than the Stunner, but its lightness and wordplay make it stick.

Different styles of cool

Not every memorable name needs a dark image or a pun. WWE’s list also includes Sabu’s Triple Jump Moonsault, Batista’s Batista Bomb, Jeff Hardy’s Swanton Bomb and Mr. Perfect’s Perfect-Plex. At the more literal end is Top Rope Elbow Drop: clear about the move rather than mysterious or character-driven. The contrast is useful—evocative branding gives a maneuver personality, while a descriptive name tells the audience what to expect.

Fan conversations also pair familiar names such as Stone Cold Stunner and Tombstone with One Winged Angel, Rainmaker and Shining Wizard. That range shows how different naming styles appeal to fans; a discussion thread is an example of fan language, not a representative survey.

How to judge a wrestling move name

  • Sound: Is it brief, distinctive and easy to remember?
  • Image: Does it suggest danger, flight, impact or some other clear feeling?
  • Character: Does it feel specific to the wrestler rather than interchangeable?
  • History: Does the name’s origin or a later renaming add another layer?

By those standards, the RKO is an especially complete name: concise, tied to Orton and backed by a lineage of renaming. The Tombstone and Red Arrow show opposite strengths—dark character imagery and aerial motion—while Sharpshooter and Stunner demonstrate how a technical-sounding threat and a blunt impact can each fit their performer. That is a way to make a personal shortlist, not an objective ranking: WWE’s 50 are editorial choices, and no sourced poll establishes one universally coolest name.
