Complexly, the educational media company behind Crash Course and SciShow, announced on February 6, 2026, that it had become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The organization says Hank and John Green donated the company to support its mission of making trustworthy educational content and keeping barriers to learning low.
What changed when Complexly became a nonprofit?
Complexly began in 2012, when Hank and John Green set out to create educational YouTube channels that were both informative and entertaining. It grew into a network of shows, including Crash Course and SciShow. Complexly’s about page describes its mission as creating “trustworthy stuff that inspires curiosity and lowers barriers to knowledge-building.”
On February 6, 2026, the organization announced that the founders had donated the company to establish a nonprofit. Complexly’s support page identifies Complexly Inc as a 501(c)(3) public charity and says donations help make and distribute free educational content.
What does the change mean for ownership and leadership?
A nonprofit does not have owners who hold equity in the way a privately held company does. The Associated Press reported that Hank and John Green gave up any equity they held in Complexly as part of the transition. The AP also reported that Hank would join the board and continue hosting some shows, while John would become “founder emeritus.” These are reported transition details; Complexly’s current pages establish its nonprofit status but do not confirm every role.

The AP reported that Complexly CEO Julie Walsh Smith said the organization had grown to a point where it no longer needed the founders’ day-to-day leadership. That change in structure does not, by itself, establish that every operating practice or funding source changed.
Why did the founders make the transition?
Complexly says the nonprofit structure will help it deepen its work creating trustworthy educational content and lowering barriers to knowledge-building. In the AP’s account, the decision was also shaped by concern about dependence on advertising and a desire to make trustworthy content available as a public good.

John Green told the AP: “Our goal at Complexly has always been to make trustworthy content. And making Complexly a public good, for me, is the next step in that process.” Hank Green described the aim as creating “good information on the internet,” according to the same report.
What happens to Complexly’s shows and funding?
Complexly says its educational content remains free and that the nonprofit structure is intended to support that mission over time. The organization’s support page invites donations for producing and distributing free content; donating is one way viewers can support the work, not a condition for watching it.

The AP reported in February 2026 that Complexly already received philanthropic funding and named YouTube, PBS, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Arizona State University, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute as examples of partners and funders at that time. That reporting is not an exhaustive or necessarily current list, and the transition does not establish that all funding now comes from donations.
