Donald Trump appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien on December 10, 1997. He was promoting his book The Art of the Comeback, according to TV Insider’s account of the anecdote: TV Insider.
Nearly three decades later, O’Brien and Maron returned to the segment during a July 17, 2025 conversation on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Maron said he was the next guest after Trump. Their discussion is the source of the pocket-and-condom story as now widely retold: the episode transcript.
What O’Brien and Maron remembered
O’Brien recalled asking Trump how much cash he carried, reaching toward his blazer pocket, and pulling out a condom. Maron recalled making a joke when he came on after Trump: “Why is Donald Trump carrying his own condoms? Don’t prostitutes usually have them with them?” He also recalled saying, “I’ll probably end up dead in the East River.” These are lines attributed to Maron’s recollection of the exchange, rather than independently verified quotations from the 1997 recording: TV Insider and the episode transcript.
