His remarks came moments after Kristen Welker interviewed McDaniel on Meet the Press on March 24, 2024. NBC had sought a former party leader’s perspective on the election, but reversed the appointment after objections from journalists and network personalities.
What Chuck Todd said about the hire
After Welker’s interview, Todd joined the Meet the Press roundtable and addressed the hiring decision. He told her: “I think our bosses owe you an apology for putting you in this situation, because I don’t know what to believe.”
Todd’s concern was not that Welker should not have interviewed McDaniel. The interview had been scheduled before NBC announced the appointment. Welker told viewers she was interviewing McDaniel as a news figure, not a colleague, and said she had not been involved in the hiring decision. Todd instead questioned the effect of the contributor contract on how viewers should interpret McDaniel’s answers.
“I have no idea whether any answer she gave to you was because she didn’t want to mess up her contract,” he said. He also described the unease among colleagues: “There is a reason a lot of journalists at NBC News are uncomfortable.”

Why McDaniel’s interview intensified the dispute
Her answer about the 2020 election
Welker asked McDaniel whether Joe Biden had won the 2020 election “fair and square.” McDaniel replied, “Fair and square he won. It’s certified. It’s done.” In a CNN interview the previous year, McDaniel had said, “But I don’t think he won it fair. I don’t. I’m not going to say that.” The difference between those public statements gave context to Todd’s question about what McDaniel believed and whether a new paid role could shape what she said.

Her comments about speaking as party chair
McDaniel condemned the violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, when Welker asked about it. She also reflected on the pressures of her former position, saying, “When you’re the RNC chair you kind of take one for the whole team, right?” She said she could speak more freely after leaving the role. That explanation underscored the dispute over whether her statements as a political leader—and her answers after leaving that job—could be evaluated independently of her party obligations.

Why NBC hired her—and why journalists objected
NBC said McDaniel would contribute analysis on American politics and the 2024 election across NBC News platforms. The network presented her experience as a former national party chair as valuable during an important election year. That is the case for bringing a political insider into coverage: firsthand knowledge of party strategy and leadership can give viewers perspective that a reporter or outside analyst may not have.
The counterargument focused on credibility and independence. Some NBC and MSNBC journalists were uncomfortable with the appointment, and Todd cited professional dealings with the RNC that he described as involving “gaslighting” and “character assassination.” Critics questioned whether a paid contributor role risked lending NBC’s authority to a figure whose record and previous public claims were themselves part of the story. These were criticisms of the appointment, not findings from a formal standards ruling or investigation.

Following public objections from journalists and network personalities, NBC reversed its decision. The reversal ended the short-lived contributor appointment, but it did not itself prove every criticism correct. The episode illustrates the editorial trade-off: a network may value a former political leader’s access and perspective while also weighing how that person’s history, incentives, and role could affect audience trust.

The Associated Press covered the reversal and the wider debate over former political officials as television commentators. The AP also reported that several outlets described a proposed salary of $300,000 a year; that amount was not established by a primary-source employment announcement and should not be treated as confirmed compensation.
