Civil War (2024) imagines a United States already torn apart by war, but it is less interested in explaining the country’s political fracture than in showing what it means to witness the violence. Written and directed by Alex Garland, the film follows journalists travelling from New York toward Washington to interview the president as rebel forces advance. Its central story is their dangerous work of documenting a conflict whose causes remain largely out of view.
What is Civil War really about?
The title and premise suggest an alternate-history political thriller: a recognizable United States split by armed conflict. But the film’s organizing perspective belongs not to generals, presidents or strategists, but to a group of journalists on the road. Lee, played by Kirsten Dunst, is a photojournalist; her camera and the group’s reporting mission shape how the audience encounters the war.
As the journalists travel from New York toward Washington, hoping to interview the president before rebel forces reach the capital, each encounter becomes part of their attempt to record events. The journey gives the film its structure, while the act of looking—and deciding what to capture—becomes its deeper subject. Why doesn’t the film explain the civil war?
Civil War offers no comprehensive map of the factions or full account of how the conflict began. The Associated Press noted that the story is not mapped directly onto present-day political polarization. The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, reported that the absence of context became a focus of audience discussion. The result is a deliberate-seeming gap: viewers see the consequences of a national collapse more clearly than its political mechanics.

That choice changes the question the film asks. Rather than inviting viewers to solve a detailed factional blueprint, it directs attention to what violence looks and feels like to people moving through it—and to how images and reports can make upheaval visible. The ambiguity can resist a simple partisan reading, but it can also feel evasive or incomplete to viewers who want the film to explain who is fighting, why, and for what future.
Is it a political movie or a war-journalism story?
It is both, but its most concrete through-line is journalism under pressure. Garland told the Guardian, “I think serious journalism needs protecting, because it’s under attack, so I wanted to make those people ‘heroes’ to put them front and centre.” That intention is reflected in the film’s choice to follow reporters rather than make combatants’ strategy or leaders’ ideology the main source of explanation. Garland told the Associated Press that he wrote the screenplay in 2020 and called the film a warning, but he did not present its invented conflict as a specific forecast of an American civil war. He said, “When things collapse, the speed at which they collapse tends to surprise people — including people like intelligence officers whose job is to watch and predict when these things will happen,” and described the film’s approach as “The film is just reporting.” These comments frame the work as a response to anxieties about social breakdown, not a one-to-one prediction or party allegory. How does the filmmaking put viewers in the war zone?
The film’s visual approach supports its reporter-centered point of view. Cinematographer Rob Hardy, ASC, BSC, told the American Society of Cinematographers, “Our approach was always about what it must feel like to be present in a war zone,” and called the look “abrasive.” The ASC account says combat photography is integral to the film’s perspective; Hardy estimated that approximately 70 percent of the film was shot using prototype DJI Ronin 4D / Zenmuse X9 rigs. That visual emphasis sharpens the film’s central tension: a photograph or report can bear witness, but filming violence can also turn it into an image for others to consume. Rather than offering a settled political explanation, Garland keeps the audience close to the people trying to document events and leaves room to consider the risks, limits and power of that act.

- How much background does it provide? It gives a near-future setting and a country at war, but withholds a full account of the conflict’s origins and factional politics.
- Whose perspective organizes the story? Reporters and photographers, rather than military leaders or combatants, guide the journey.
- How is violence presented? The film emphasizes the destabilizing experience of witnessing and recording it, rather than making tactical explanation the primary lens.
- Does it resolve the political meaning? It leaves viewers to interpret the conflict instead of supplying a complete political map.
