The Smithsonian describes it as the Year of the Fire Horse. Below are ready-to-share wishes and captions, plus a few accurately attributed words from public New Year messages. Original suggestions are labeled as messages—not traditional quotations.
Chinese New Year 2026 greetings and meaning
The Shanghai Municipal Government’s cultural guide gives two common greetings: 新年好 (xīn nián hǎo) and 新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè), both meaning “Happy New Year.” The guide describes New Year visits as a time to bid farewell to the old year, welcome the new, and exchange wishes. It notes that younger family members commonly offer elders blessings for health, longevity, and good fortune; customs and preferred wording vary among families, regions, and communities.
The first day was February 17, but Spring Festival is not simply a one-day observance. The Shanghai guide says folk observance can run from Laba or Little New Year through the Lantern Festival, with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as the high point. Separately, mainland China’s 2026 public-holiday schedule ran February 15–23, with February 14 and 28 designated make-up workdays. That administrative schedule is not the lunar-calendar New Year date. Shanghai Municipal Government: key dates and customs; State Council holiday notice.

The Shanghai guide describes different regional food traditions: dumplings are associated with New Year’s Day meals in northern China, while glutinous rice balls or rice cakes are examples from southern regions. If your caption mentions a particular dish, make sure it reflects your own celebration rather than suggesting all families share one tradition. The same guide explains 马到成功 (mǎ dào chéng gōng) as “success as soon as the horse arrives.” It is one possible idiom, not a greeting every recipient will use. Read the Shanghai guide to dates and customs.

- Wishing you and your family health, happiness, and success in the year ahead. Happy Chinese New Year.

Powerful Chinese New Year quotes—with attribution
The lines below are quotations from specific public messages, not ancient proverbs. Keep the attribution if sharing them.
- “The Silver Snake dances farewell to the old year, the Golden Steed gallops forth to welcome the new.” — Xu Wei, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, at the 2026 Chinese New Year reception. Read the remarks.
- “May the Year of the Horse bring us health, happiness and prosperity!” — Sam Hou Fai, Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, in his 2026 official New Year message. Read the message.
For a traditional greeting rather than a quotation, use 新年好 (xīn nián hǎo) or 新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè), both translated as “Happy New Year” by the Shanghai Municipal Government’s guide. See the guide.
