May–June 2016: Dating begins, then comes their public red-carpet debut
Entertainment Tonight reported that Evans and Slate began dating in May 2016; neither actor publicly announced that start date. In June, they appeared together at the New York City premiere of The Secret Life of Pets, which ET described as their red-carpet debut as a publicly linked couple. Slate told the outlet they had been friends for a while and joked that Evans was her “dream 7th grade boyfriend.”
February 2017: The first split is reported
On February 8, 2017, Entertainment Tonight reported that the pair had split “a few weeks” earlier, after less than a year together. Its description of the breakup as amicable and its report that they would remain friends came from an unnamed source close to the couple. The outlet said representatives had not responded by publication, so those details should not be treated as a joint statement from Evans and Slate.

March 2017: Slate reflects on fame, privacy and the timing
In a Vulture interview covered by Elle and TIME on March 21, Slate spoke warmly of Evans: “I don’t mind talking about [Evans] at all. He’s a lovely person.” She also said she had no regrets about the relationship: “No regrets, though. Ever.”
Slate described the attention around dating a highly objectified celebrity as confusing and stressful. As TIME reported her explanation, “For him to go to a restaurant is totally different than for me to go.” She also discussed her divorce: she and her former husband had been separated for a couple of months before she began dating Evans, but she had not fully considered how to process both transitions. These were circumstances she described, not a single definitive explanation for the breakup or an accusation against Evans.

March–April 2017: They speak warmly during Gifted promotion
As they promoted the film, Evans praised Slate’s command of language, compassion and honesty. ABC News quoted him, relaying comments from a People interview, as saying, “She’s my favorite human.” At the Gifted premiere in April, Slate called him “an absolutely, really giving performer and a wonderful actor.” Evans replied, “She’s the best.” Their public comments after the first split were affectionate, but did not amount to a public explanation of why they separated.
Late 2017: A reunion is reported
On November 30, 2017, TIME reported that People had confirmed Evans and Slate were back together. The coverage cited a recent joint real-estate-shopping outing in New York and social-media interaction. This was a press report based on those details and People’s confirmation, not a direct reunion statement from the actors.

By March 2018: The second split is reported
UPI reported on March 22, 2018, that Evans had described the relationship as “recently ended” in a New York Times interview. That places the second split by March 2018, but does not establish the exact date. UPI’s account is the basis for the timing here; it should not be expanded into a more precise breakup date or an invented quotation from the underlying interview.

The chronology combines first-person recollections and comments with entertainment-news reporting, and those sources do not establish every milestone in the same way. Slate’s remarks about her experience are direct reflections; the May 2016 dating start and February 2017 first split were reported by ET, with the amicability attributed to an unnamed source; and the late-2017 reunion was reported through People and public sightings. Treating those distinctions carefully avoids turning private events into more certain or more public facts than the reporting supports.
