Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black say their marriage has endured through commitment, careful communication and respect for their friendship. Their “nurture and protect” description comes from their own experience—not a formula guaranteed to work for every couple. They married on October 20, 1991, so the “30-year marriage” framing belongs to anniversary-era coverage: in 2026, they were approaching 35 years together.

What Clint Black and Lisa Hartman say keeps their marriage strong

The couple’s advice centers on looking after the relationship and talking through problems rather than letting misunderstandings remain unresolved. Lisa Hartman Black put communication plainly in a 2026 interview: “We strongly believe in communicating,” she told Fox News.

In a separate interview with Music Mayhem, Clint Black described communication as essential. Hartman Black added that they do not leave things “unsaid, undone, unsettled,” and stressed that they are best friends who respect their friendship. Her point is not simply to talk more, but to address what is bothering them and treat their bond with care.

What “nurture and protect” means in their account

Black’s phrase describes an attitude of commitment: he has said that they nurtured and protected the marriage and committed to seeing it through. The remark appears in an automatically generated iHeart podcast transcript, which warns that its accuracy is not guaranteed. The central idea is consistent with the couple’s other interviews, but the transcript wording should not be treated as a verified verbatim quotation.

Together, their comments suggest three parts to their approach: stay committed, clarify misunderstandings, and preserve respect for the friendship beneath the marriage. That is their account of what has mattered in their relationship; it is not evidence that the same approach will produce the same outcome for other couples.

The couple’s timeline, from meeting to nearly 35 years married

Black’s official biography records that he married Hartman in Katy, Texas, on October 20, 1991, and that their daughter, Lily Pearl Black, was born in 2001. Fox News’ 2026 interview independently gives the wedding date and reports that they met backstage after one of Black’s concerts on New Year’s Eve 1990. With their 35th anniversary due in October 2026, “30-year marriage” is an older milestone description, not their current anniversary count.

The “don’t go to bed angry” advice they recall

Black has attributed the familiar line “don’t ever go to bed angry” to Roy Rogers in the Music Mayhem interview. It is a piece of advice the couple remembers, not a research-backed universal rule. Their other comments point to the practical idea behind it: communicate and try to settle misunderstandings rather than leave them hanging.
