Eastwood praised Hackman’s acting in a statement reported the following day; officials announced the causes and approximate timing of the deaths later.
What Clint Eastwood said about Gene Hackman
“There was no finer actor than Gene. Intense and instinctive. Never a false note. He was also a dear friend whom I will miss very much,” Eastwood said in a statement reported by the Associated Press on February 27, 2025.
The tribute joined the public condolences that followed news of Hackman’s death. Eastwood had directed Hackman in the 1992 western Unforgiven, a shared film credit that gives their friendship a direct professional connection.
When Hackman and Arakawa were found
Hackman, 95, and Arakawa were found at their home outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, on February 26, 2025. A dog was also reported dead at the property. The initial accounts described a discovery and an investigation; they did not yet establish the medical causes or sequence of the deaths. CBS News reported the discovery and initial details on February 27.

What officials later said about the deaths
New Mexico officials’ findings, reported by the Associated Press on March 7, attributed Hackman’s death to heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s disease, and Arakawa’s death to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. AP reported that Hackman died about a week after Arakawa. These conclusions came after the initial discovery reports, not as part of Eastwood’s February 27 tribute. Release of investigation records
On April 15, 2025, Santa Fe County announced that redacted records concerning the deaths had been released following an order from the First Judicial District Court. The county’s announcement is available on its official website.
