In a Seventeen cover interview published April 7, 2025, Clairo said that being queer is a significant part of who she is, but that she does not want to commit to a definite label or answer on a deadline. She also recognized that labels give some people clarity; her comments describe her own experience, not a rule for anyone else.
What did Clairo say about her sexuality?
In Samantha Olson’s Seventeen cover story, “Clairo’s Age of Clarity,” Clairo said: “I don’t care for labels at all. I believe people should like who they want and no one should have a problem with it.”
She also described being queer as “a huge part of who I am.” The interview therefore pairs a clear self-description with her reluctance to settle on a more specific label.
Why doesn’t Clairo want a definite label?
Clairo said she wished she could tell her younger self that she did not need a definite answer. “I can still be curious, date, and kiss who I want,” she said, adding, “I don’t have to wake up and decide who I am by a certain day.” Her point was that she did not need to resolve her identity on a timetable.

- Made of paper, clear image
The interviewer placed those reflections in the context of Clairo publicly coming out as bi in 2018 and her earlier discomfort with being boxed in as a queer musician. The 2025 comments describe how she spoke about labels in this interview; they should not be taken to erase or revise what she said about herself in 2018.
Did Clairo say labels are bad for everyone?
No. Clairo explicitly acknowledged that labels can help other people: “I also understand that people benefit from drawing a hard line for themselves—having a clear path is also important. It varies person to person.” Her view is personal: she does not care for labels in her own experience, while recognizing that other people may value them for clarity or boundaries.
