The City of Perth plans New Year’s Eve fireworks across Elizabeth Quay, Barrack Square and Supreme Court Gardens on 31 December 2026, including an 8:30pm family show and a midnight display. A short rooftop launch is also planned for Northbridge. The City’s current plan is the latest stage of a strategy first announced in 2024, when then Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said Sydney’s internationally visible fireworks had inspired Perth’s push for a bigger midnight event.

What changed in Perth’s fireworks plan?
The 2024 announcement introduced a midnight Elizabeth Quay show
In October 2024, PerthNow reported that the City planned its first midnight New Year’s Eve fireworks over the Swan River at Elizabeth Quay, alongside an earlier 8:30pm family display. The report said Northbridge fireworks would continue. It also noted that the January 26 Langley Park fireworks would proceed that year.

Sydney was explicitly cited as inspiration for the 2024 decision, but the City’s stated ambition is not evidence that Perth has already become an equivalent international event.

PerthNow quoted then Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas saying, “Sydney’s fireworks are famous the world over,” and that he wanted Perth’s event to reach international audiences: “I would like Perth’s fireworks on NYE to be fireworks that are shown on CNN, Fox News and through Europe when that New Year’s Eve whip around happens.” He added, “That’s where I would like us to get to,” and called a midnight event “a big first step towards making Perth’s NYE a world-class event.” Those remarks described a goal, not confirmed broadcast coverage or an achieved ranking.
The available City plans and event reports establish Perth’s schedule, footprint and some local attendance figures. They do not provide a like-for-like comparison with Sydney on audience measurement, event costs, broadcast reach, safety or accessibility. A claim that one event is larger or performs better would require comparable evidence on those measures.
