The Netflix page checked for this article showed an unavailable-in-your-country notice, and the available evidence does not confirm a Netflix viewing surge or a broad, platform-driven rediscovery. Here is what the film is, what its continued attention can—and cannot—tell us, and where U.S. viewers could find it according to an October 7, 2026 availability check.
What is City of God?
City of God (Cidade de Deus) is a 2002 Brazilian crime drama directed by Fernando Meirelles. Its story centers on Rocket, an aspiring artist and photographer growing up amid violence in Rio de Janeiro. Photography gives him a way to observe the world around him while trying to pursue a different life.

Netflix describes Rocket as using photography to “observe and avoid a life of drugs and crime.” Miramax’s official synopsis says his ambition to become a professional photographer becomes “a window into his world and ultimately his way out.” Miramax credits Paulo Lins as writer and lists Alexandre Rodrigues, Seu Jorge, Alice Braga, Leandro Firmino and Phellipe Haagensen among the cast.
Is City of God on Netflix?
Netflix has a catalogue page for the 2002 film, but the page accessed for this article displayed: “Oh no! This title currently isn’t available to watch in your country.” The page output did not identify the country, so that notice should not be taken as a statement about every Netflix region.

Netflix catalogues vary by country and can change. Search for the film in your own Netflix account to check your local availability; a catalogue listing or search result alone does not guarantee that playback is available where you live.
Where else could U.S. viewers watch it?
JustWatch’s U.S. page said it checked 375 streaming services on October 7, 2026. That number is the count of services checked—not the number carrying the film. On that date, the page listed these options:
Rank #2
| Route | U.S. listing on October 7, 2026 | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription streaming | Paramount+ Essential | A subscription option listed by JustWatch; this is not Netflix availability. |
| Free streaming | Kanopy and Hoopla | Listed as free streaming options. Check each service for current access and eligibility in your area. |
| Digital rental or purchase | Options listed by JustWatch | One-time digital transactions rather than a streaming subscription; check the current listing and terms. |
| Physical media | DVD and Blu-ray purchase options, including Amazon DVD / Blu-ray | Check current stock, edition, language and subtitle details before buying. |
These are time-sensitive U.S. listings, not a guarantee of present availability or options in another country. Consult JustWatch’s U.S. availability page for current listings. If you prefer a disc, DVD or Blu-ray can be an alternative to rotating streaming catalogues, but confirm the specific edition and its features before purchase.
Why does the film still draw attention?
The film has a documented awards history: Miramax lists a 2002 Toronto International Film Festival Visions Award, a 2003 Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, and four 2004 Academy Award nominations—for adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing and director. That recognition helps explain the film’s lasting profile, but it does not show that Netflix viewers have newly rediscovered it.
Rank #3
There are signs that people continued discussing the film in 2026. Rotten Tomatoes showed individual audience reviews from that year, including comments from people seeing it for the first time and revisiting it years later. JustWatch displayed 5.8k watchlist entries when its page was accessed, a changing counter on a third-party service. Neither signal establishes how many people watched the film, where they watched it or why.
No Netflix Top 10 placement, official Netflix viewing-hours figure or source-backed increase in viewers is established by the available evidence. The premise of a Netflix-driven rediscovery should therefore be treated as an angle to investigate, not a confirmed audience trend.
Rank #4
What about City of God: 10 Years Later?
Netflix also has a separate page for the 2013 documentary City of God: 10 Years Later, described as a reunion in which some cast and crew members find out what paths their lives took. The page accessed for this article showed an unavailable-in-your-country notice for that documentary as well. Its availability, like the feature film’s, depends on the country and can change.
