The footage documents wreckage on the seafloor as investigative evidence; it is not the separate video recorded aboard the support ship Polar Prince. All five people aboard Titan died during the June 18 dive toward the Titanic wreck, according to the U.S. Coast Guard’s August 5, 2025 announcement of its investigation report.
What does the Coast Guard Titan video show?
The Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation’s archive identifies ROV footage from the Titan incident salvage. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) later reported that ROV video showed the pressure vessel fragmented into multiple pieces. Investigators located the wreckage about 330 meters east-northeast of the Titanic’s bow, according to the NTSB report dated October 2, 2025.
The footage’s value is investigative: it records the wreckage and its condition after recovery operations reached the seafloor. The available NTSB account supports the broad description of a fragmented pressure vessel, but does not establish what each individual frame depicts. Avoid treating unverified frame-by-frame descriptions or claims about human remains as confirmed.
How the ROV footage differs from the Polar Prince video
The two releases show different events from different recording locations. The salvage footage comes from an ROV at the seafloor and concerns wreckage; the later video was recorded aboard the support ship and shows people monitoring Titan’s descent.

The Polar Prince recording is not the ROV wreckage video. The Coast Guard’s description of the sound is also an attribution to the agency, not a sound recorded by the ROV at the wreck site.
What investigators recovered—and what they did not
During salvage operations in September 2023, the Coast Guard and Navy recovered wreckage that included the aft dome and an external camera, according to the NTSB. Investigators recovered 12 still images and nine videos from that camera’s memory card. The NTSB says none of those files came from the fatal dive. They are therefore distinct from the ROV footage recorded during salvage.

Timeline of the Titan footage and investigation
- June 18, 2023: Titan imploded during a dive toward the Titanic wreck, killing all five people aboard, according to the Coast Guard.
- September 2023: Coast Guard and Navy salvage operations retrieved wreckage, including the aft dome and an external camera, according to the NTSB.
- September 2024: The Coast Guard Marine Board held public hearings and released ROV salvage footage in connection with its investigation. The Coast Guard archive index identifies incident-salvage ROV footage.
- May 2025: The Coast Guard released the separate Polar Prince video associated with the sound believed by the agency to be the implosion.
- August 5, 2025: The Coast Guard announced release of its Report of Investigation into the loss of Titan.
- October 2, 2025: The NTSB dated its report on Titan’s hull failure and implosion.
Why the footage matters
ROV video gave investigators visual evidence of the wreckage’s condition and helped document the fragmented pressure vessel. It should be read alongside the agencies’ reports rather than as a complete explanation by itself: the footage shows salvage imagery, while the investigative reports describe the findings and recovered material. The onboard camera files, meanwhile, were recovered from an external camera and did not record the fatal dive.
