The moment came during Palmer’s post-match interview with CBS Sports after Chelsea’s win. He held the microphone as the Player of the Match trophy sat tucked into his shorts. When Anita Jones asked about it, Palmer gave the practical explanation: “I got no pockets, so I put it there.” CBS Sports’ account of the interview presents the exchange as a light-hearted moment; it does not establish that Palmer was embarrassed or trying to provoke anyone.

Why was Palmer holding the trophy?
Palmer had been named Player of the Match after providing two key assists in Chelsea’s comeback. UEFA’s award announcement credits his contribution to the final, including those assists. UEFA’s Player of the Match announcement identifies the award as Player of the Match—not Player of the Tournament.
How Chelsea won the final
The final was played in Wrocław on May 28, 2025. Real Betis led 1-0 at halftime after Abdessamad Ezzalzouli scored in the ninth minute. Chelsea scored all four of its goals after the break:
