Chris Brown sued Warner Bros. and production company Ample LLC in January 2025, seeking $500 million over the 2024 documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence. In January 2026, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge dismissed his claims against the companies under California’s anti-SLAPP law. The ruling addressed whether Brown had shown minimal merit for his defamation claims; it did not decide whether the documentary’s underlying sexual-assault allegation was true. The available reporting does not establish whether Brown appealed.
Why did Chris Brown sue Warner Bros.?
Brown filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court in January 2025 against Warner Bros. and Ample LLC, the production company behind Chris Brown: A History of Violence. His complaint alleged that the documentary made false statements about him, harmed his reputation and portrayed him as a “serial rapist and sexual abuser.” That phrase was his lawyers’ characterization in the complaint, not a court finding. Contemporary reporting described his suit as seeking $500 million in damages—not an amount awarded by a court. The Guardian and the Los Angeles Times reported the filing and requested damages.

Brown’s legal team framed the dispute as a media company putting profit ahead of truth. That was advocacy for its client, not a judicial conclusion. McCathern Law’s announcement reflects the plaintiff’s position.
What was the documentary about?
Released in October 2024, Chris Brown: A History of Violence examined allegations of misconduct and sexual assault involving Brown. Among the accounts discussed was a woman’s allegation concerning a 2020 yacht incident. Brown disputed her allegation; it should be understood as an allegation, not an established fact. Global News’ coverage of the documentary describes its subject and release.

Was the lawsuit dismissed?
On January 12, 2026, Judge Colin Leis dismissed Brown’s claims against Warner Bros. and Ample after granting their anti-SLAPP motion. California’s anti-SLAPP procedure provides a way to challenge claims based on protected speech or petitioning activity. In this case, the judge concluded Brown had not met the required threshold of showing minimal merit for the allegedly defamatory statements. Bloomberg Law reported that Leis wrote: “Plaintiff has failed to meet his burden in establishing the minimal merit of any of the allegedly defamatory statements.” Bloomberg Law’s report covers the dismissal.
The ruling was about the legal sufficiency of Brown’s claims against the companies at this stage. It was not a finding that Brown committed the alleged assault, nor a general determination of every factual dispute raised by the documentary.

What did the judge say about the documentary?
In reporting on the order, Billboard said Leis had watched the entire documentary and found that it recited most of the inconsistencies Brown identified, including the existence of text messages. The judge characterized the film as a “fair and true” report of the woman’s statements and judicial record. These comments explain why the challenged portrayal did not meet the minimal-merit threshold in the judge’s assessment; they should not be confused with a finding that the underlying assault allegation was true. The iHeart syndication of Billboard’s coverage reports the judge’s remarks.
