Healthcare and athletics
Boston.com reported that Williams attended Springfield College, earned a nursing degree from Duke, and also studied at the University of Central Florida. She worked as a nurse practitioner. The report, citing an ESPN profile, said she came close to qualifying for the 2000 Olympics as a triathlete; she also ran the Boston Marathons in 2003 and 2004.
In an elegy accompanying the Red Sox announcement, her husband, Eric Abel, remembered her commitment to healthcare: “Your decision to work in healthcare was a calling.”

Her family and her father’s legacy
The Red Sox called Williams the only remaining immediate family member of Ted Williams at the time of her death. Her brother, John Henry Williams, died in 2004. The club said Eric Abel, her husband of 17 years, had also served as the Williams family’s attorney for more than 30 years.
Her work to preserve her father’s story included writing Ted Williams, My Father: A Memoir. In a first-person Boston Globe feature, Williams said she wrote the book to set her family’s story straight and defend her father and brother. The feature recounts the controversy that followed Ted Williams’s death in 2002 over the family’s decision to preserve his body through cryonics. Williams presented her own account of that decision, describing it as private and not for profit; it should be understood as her perspective, not as a resolution of the family’s disputed accounts.
