Chuck E. Cheese’s animatronic band has largely disappeared from remodeled restaurants, but it did not vanish in one nationwide shutdown. The company’s current FAQ says the figures are preserved at six legacy locations across California, New York, North Carolina, Illinois and Ontario. It does not name the addresses or confirm that every show is operating, so check with a venue before making a trip.
What happened to the Chuck E. Cheese animatronics?
Chuck E. Cheese gradually retired the robotic shows as it remodeled restaurants and shifted toward newer attractions. The process unfolded over several years, and the company’s plans for keeping bands changed along the way. A November 2023 announcement singled out Northridge, California, as the only U.S. restaurant expected to retain a full original band. By May 2024, the company had added three more full-band locations, plus a Nanuet, New York, restaurant that would retain a solo Chuck E. A later Chicago renovation removed the last animatronic musicians in the area.
The company now says animatronics are preserved at six legacy locations in five regions. “Preserved” describes the figures’ status, not a guarantee that a full show is currently running. The company’s FAQ does not list the addresses, so older news reports should not be treated as a current location directory.
Are any Chuck E. Cheese animatronics left?
Yes. CEC Entertainment’s current FAQ reports preserved animatronics at six legacy locations across California, New York, North Carolina, Illinois and Ontario. It does not identify the six restaurants, specify which figures are at each one, or publish a count of functioning shows or their schedules. Contact a specific location directly to confirm what visitors can see before visiting.

The FAQ says the company restores figures for the legacy locations, stores some, or responsibly decommissions them. It also says Chuck E. Cheese does not sell or auction the animatronics to the public.
Why did Chuck E. Cheese remove the animatronic bands?
The change reflects modernization as well as the practical demands of maintaining aging machinery. In a 2023 Los Angeles Times report, then-CEO David McKillips said the figures were decades old and required significant upkeep: “These are decades old, and we have a dedicated technician at every single location who spends a fair amount of time making sure the animatronics are working properly.” He said Northridge was chosen partly because its figures were in particularly good condition: “One of the reasons we choose Northridge is because those animatronics are in great shape.”

The company did not describe the transition as a single technical failure or give one exclusive reason for removing the bands. The evidence points to a shift in entertainment format alongside the complexity of keeping aging shows working.
What replaced the robotic shows?
Modernized restaurants emphasize interactive attractions rather than a stage-bound mechanical band. CEC’s 2023 Northridge announcement described interactive dance floors, large video screens, arcade games and trampoline zones at select centers; the attractions vary by location. Character entertainment also continued in a different form. The Chicago Tribune reported that a costumed Chuck E. danced, lip-synced with video and greeted children after the robots were removed from remodeled restaurants.

How did the band become part of Chuck E. Cheese?
The first Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Time Theatre opened in San Jose, California, in 1977. Its animatronic show was a designed entertainment system, not just a collection of moving figures: IEEE Spectrum’s history describes pneumatic mechanisms synchronized with recorded sound and data tapes, with computer programming controlling the early installation.

ShowBiz Pizza later featured the Rock-afire Explosion. After a rights dispute, the company began “Concept Unification” in 1990, adapting Rock-afire figures into the Munch’s Make Believe Band identity as ShowBiz restaurants were rebranded over the following years, according to IEEE Spectrum. That history helped make the animatronic stage a distinctive part of the chain’s identity for generations of customers.

Can you buy a retired Chuck E. Cheese animatronic?
No. CEC’s FAQ says it does not sell or auction the figures to the public. The company says it restores some for legacy locations, stores some and responsibly decommissions others. Its FAQ also describes a licensed online store selling items such as apparel, books, toys and collectibles, but those are merchandise—not the retired stage animatronics.
