In an August 2022 feature, Chris Mainwaring’s daughter Maddy remembered him first as her father, not as a celebrated West Coast Eagles player. She said the years she had with him were enough to make him “everything to us.” The story’s 15-year framing referred to the time since his death in 2007; it is a historical anniversary, not a current one.
Maddy remembered a father, even as others knew a football star
In the feature by Rangi Hirini, published by PerthNow on 13 August 2022, Maddy recalled growing up aware that her father was not an ordinary dad. Children at school recognized Chris during drop-offs, asked him to play football and requested autographs. For Maddy, however, the lasting memory was the relationship within their family.
“He was an amazing dad. Obviously, I was really young and didn’t get a whole lot of years with him but the years that I did have there’s nothing more I could have asked for. He was everything to us,” she said.
Maddy and her younger brother Zac were children when Chris died in 2007. The feature says Maddy was eight and Zac was six, and describes the family’s grief as public as well as personal.

The Eagles community remained close to the family
The PerthNow feature describes Maddy, Zac and their mother, Rani, as being kept close by the West Coast Eagles football family after Chris’s death. In June 2022, Maddy attended a club event marking 30 years since West Coast’s first premiership, won in 1992. She took her father’s place among former players and club figures.
“Those boys took me under their wing and it was like I was family again. They definitely haven’t forgotten us which is really nice,” Maddy said.
