Why Chuck Negron mattered to Three Dog Night
Negron formed Three Dog Night in Los Angeles with fellow vocalists Cory Wells and Danny Hutton. The group became one of the leading hitmaking acts of the late 1960s and early 1970s, known for energetic recordings of songs written by other composers.
Negron sang lead on “One,” written by Harry Nilsson, and “Just an Old Fashioned Love Song.” On “Joy to the World,” he delivered the instantly recognizable opening, “Jeremiah was a bullfrog!” He also helped persuade the band to try the Hoyt Axton song after it had previously been turned down. Other well-known Three Dog Night interpretations included Laura Nyro’s “Eli’s Coming” and Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come.”
