The finale’s biggest decision is Boden’s, but it also advances several other stories: Damon reveals a family connection to Severide, Carver’s actions lead to a painful fallout, Severide surprises Stella with a conversation about starting a family, and Mouch looks toward his next promotion.
Why Boden left Firehouse 51
A rescue call changes how he sees leadership
Boden returns to Chicago determined to stop Chief Robinson from becoming Deputy Commissioner. During a call, a foreman is left hanging high above the ground. Boden climbs up in an attempt to save him, but the foreman falls onto an uninflated rescue mat and is hospitalized.
#1 Best Overall
When Boden visits the foreman, he learns that the man put his team first. That example makes Boden reconsider what leadership can look like beyond the firehouse. Rather than simply block Robinson, he puts his own name forward for Deputy Commissioner—and receives the appointment.
It is a promotion, not a death or unexplained exit
Boden’s departure is an advancement within the Chicago Fire Department. He takes on a higher-level role at headquarters, leaving the daily command of 51 behind. Eamonn Walker’s final episode as a series regular gives the character a consequential reason to go, while keeping him in the department and close to the people he led.

Who will lead 51 after Boden?
Boden wants Herrmann to succeed him. Herrmann is unsure he can measure up, but Boden tells him not to imitate his predecessor: he should lead as himself, by listening, looking out for people and leading with heart. The handoff is not immediate, though. Herrmann still needs to become a captain and pass the Battalion chief test.
The goodbye in Boden’s office gives the change its emotional weight. Mouch and Herrmann privately worry about how 51 will hold together without Boden. The crew gathers to tell him what he has meant to them: Stella describes people who become part of who you are; Cruz says Boden made 51 a family and the firehouse a home; and Ritter reflects on how Boden shaped his ideas about firefighting and brotherhood. Boden reminds them he will still be nearby at headquarters.

What else changes in the finale?
Damon’s connection to Severide
Damon reveals that his abusive father was Benny Severide. That makes Damon Kelly Severide’s half-brother, turning a troubled family history into an unexpected connection for the Severides.
Severide and Stella discuss starting a family
Severide tells Stella that he wants to start a family. The news catches her off guard, leaving the couple with a major personal question to work through beyond the finale.
Carver’s outburst and confession
At a restaurant call, Carver suspects a father is abusing his child and attacks him. The ensuing chaos results in Damon accidentally hitting Novak. Later, Carver tells Violet that he has fallen in love with her, then takes another furlough. These events leave his relationship with the team and his future unresolved.
Mouch plans his next step
Mouch says he intends to take the lieutenant test, adding a professional goal of his own to a finale centered on changes in leadership.

Why Boden’s exit matters
The finale treats Boden’s move as both a career decision and a difficult goodbye. The rescue call gives him a reason to imagine serving firefighters from a department-wide post; the office farewell shows the cost of leaving the daily life he built at 51. Executive producer Andrea Newman described the episode as one where “Character dilemmas and shocks abound!” in a May 19, 2024 TV Insider interview, noting that a shocking incident highlights what leadership means to Boden and that his decision affects those close to him.
