Actor Humberly González and lead writer Nikki Foy brought different parts of Star Wars Outlaws to life: González performed protagonist Kay Vess through voice and motion capture, while Foy helped shape the game’s story. In a July 2024 interview, they discussed the challenges of that work and the creative community in Toronto.
Bradly Shankar’s July 30, 2024 interview for MobileSyrup places the two women’s contributions within a production spanning Toronto and Malmö. González performed Kay Vess, and Foy was the game’s lead writer; the interview also names Navid Khavari as narrative director.

How did Humberly González perform Kay Vess?
González provided Kay’s voice and motion capture. Rather than acting amid a finished Star Wars setting, she had to build a performance in a motion-capture volume, without the completed environments, costumes, or props surrounding her. The work asks an actor to communicate a character physically and vocally while imagining much of the world that will eventually give those gestures context.
González described the capture suit as something she had to adapt to: “There’s definitely something you have to get used to, wearing almost like this second skin.” She also called the process “a very stripped version of bringing such a full world to life.” Both observations point to a distinctive tension in performance capture: the actor works with a minimal physical setup, while the finished performance is intended to inhabit a richly realized fictional world.

What appealed to Nikki Foy about writing the game?
Foy said she enjoys creative constraints and the problem-solving involved in game writing. “For me, I love working with constraints,” she said. She added, “It’s probably why I like games so much, in general; I love problem-solving.” In the interview, she also described being drawn to the opportunity to write a Star Wars game with a female protagonist and colourful characters.
That perspective helps explain the creative challenge without suggesting that a game’s story is written in isolation: the writer is working within a defined universe and a particular project, while helping develop its characters and narrative.

What were Toronto’s and Malmö’s roles?
The interview distinguishes the Toronto narrative contribution from the game’s lead development role. Ubisoft Toronto was home to the core narrative team, while Massive Entertainment in Malmö was identified as the lead developer. These are different parts of the production, not competing claims about which studio made the game.
Foy and González also spoke about Toronto’s talent and creative community. The interview connects the city to the production of the game’s story trailer at the Ubisoft Toronto studio. That local connection is not evidence that the game was deliberately designed around overt Canadian references or “Canadiana.”

What does the interview say about the Canadians behind the game?
Its focus is on creative work and place: González’s performance-capture experience, Foy’s approach to writing, and the Toronto community around their work. González put her personal connection to the city simply: “I love Toronto, I love living there.” The interview offers that perspective rather than making a broader claim that the game’s fictional setting reflects Toronto or Canada.
