Channel 9 Perth marked 50 years on air with a retrospective television special scheduled for 8:30 pm on Wednesday, 17 June 2015. The program revisited the station’s history through archive footage and photographs, with presenters and former colleagues recalling its programs and personalities.
What was Channel 9 Perth’s 50th-anniversary special?
The program commemorated the station’s first broadcast, which began as STW-9 in Perth on 12 June 1965. Contemporary coverage styled its title in two different ways: PerthNow called it “50 years: The Channel 9 Story,” while a local television-history archive used “50 Years – The Channel Nine Story.”
It was a retrospective rather than a live anniversary event: the schedule placed it on Channel Nine at 8:30 pm on Wednesday, 17 June 2015, five days after the anniversary date.
What did the program feature?
The special looked back at Channel 9 Perth’s programs and personalities using archival footage and photographs. Its format brought station history to viewers through images from its archives and recollections from people associated with the network.

Who appeared in the special?
PerthNow named Michael Thomson, Greg Pearce, Dixie Marshall and Liam Bartlett among the hosts, and reported that Jenny Seaton would join the program. Seaton, a former Nine presenter, reflected on the energy of the station’s early years: “They were fabulous and exciting times – it was about ‘let’s show everyone what we can do’.”
Thomson also recalled the pressure of a live cross in his career at Nine: “It felt like my heart was going to burst through my chest,” PerthNow reported. These are memories about their work and the station, not claims about the anniversary special’s reception.

Is this the same as Channel 9 Perth’s 60th-anniversary special?
No. Nine marked the 60th anniversary with a separate program, Celebrating 60 Years, Channel 9 Perth, which premiered on 12 June 2025 on Channel 9 and 9Now. Hosted by Michael Thomson and Tracy Vo, it was a later retrospective—not a new name or rebroadcast of the 2015 special.
A related exhibition at WA Museum Boola Bardip ran from June to August 2025, featuring station archives and historic broadcast technology. It has ended.
