Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is a 100-minute feature-film continuation of the anime, adapting Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Reze Arc. Its premise puts Denji’s connection with Reze alongside the series’ devil-hunter action; for viewers already invested in Denji, that makes it a natural next chapter. It is not the best starting point for someone unfamiliar with the characters and their world.
Spoiler-free verdict: Watch it if you want the next part of Denji’s story and are comfortable entering a continuing narrative rather than a standalone introduction. If you have not seen the anime, start there first so the film’s relationships and stakes have context. The assessment here stays at the premise level; plot-specific discussion requires spoilers.

What is Reze Arc about?
The movie adapts the Reze Arc from Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man comic and continues the anime story. Denji, now Chainsaw Man and a member of Public Safety Devil Hunters Special Division 4, meets Reze after a date with Makima. They grow close as devils and hunters remain part of the conflict, while Denji faces an emotional struggle tied to his humanity.
Sony Pictures’ official synopsis describes it this way: “Amid a brutal war between devils and hunters, another battle starts in Denji’s heart when he meets a mysterious girl named Reze.” That is promotional wording; the useful point for a prospective viewer is that the film frames its conflict around both Denji’s relationships and the larger action story.

Do you need to watch Chainsaw Man first?
Yes, if you want the story and character dynamics to land as intended. This is a continuation, not an origin story: it begins with Denji already operating as Chainsaw Man and part of Public Safety’s Devil Hunters. A newcomer can follow the basic setup, but will have less context for Denji’s place in that organization and his relationship with Makima.
For the most coherent path, watch the anime series before the movie. The film’s premise may be understandable on its own, but understanding a sequence of events is different from having the history that gives those events weight.

Is the film worth watching?
For existing fans, yes: it advances Denji’s story through a feature-length adaptation of a distinct manga arc, rather than offering a recap of the anime. The central draw is the collision between his connection with Reze and the danger surrounding devil hunters. Viewers looking for more of the series’ character drama alongside its action have a clear reason to watch.
For newcomers, wait: the movie’s setup does not replace the background established by the anime. And if you mainly want a self-contained action film with no investment in an ongoing story, this is a less suitable choice. The film’s 100-minute runtime gives the arc a feature format, but runtime alone cannot establish how satisfying its pacing feels; the official credits and synopsis do not settle that critical judgment.

The Japan Film Database lists the film as a 100-minute, color action/animation feature, directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara. Hiroshi Seko wrote the screenplay, Kazutaka Sugiyama designed the characters, Yusuke Takeda was art director, and Kensuke Ushio composed the music. MAPPA produced the film; TOHO distributed it in Japan. The credited cast includes Kikunosuke Toya as Denji, Shiori Izawa as Pochita, Tomori Kusunoki as Makima, and Reina Ueda as Reze. These credits identify the artists and production roles; they are not, by themselves, evidence of how well a particular element works on screen.
The Japanese theatrical release was September 19, 2025. Sony’s worldwide announcement listed a staggered rollout, including the United States on October 29, 2025, and said the film would play exclusively in cinemas in more than 80 countries and territories. Those are announced dates and plans, not a claim that every market followed the same schedule.

Where can you watch Reze Arc?
Sony Pictures’ official film page currently lists digital links to Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home, YouTube, and Sony Pictures Core under “Get it Now on Digital.” The page does not establish one universal price or format: access and terms can vary by territory and storefront. Check the listing available in your country before renting or buying.
Should box-office performance affect your decision?
Not much. The Associated Press reported, citing Comscore, that the film earned $17.25 million in theaters in the United States and Canada during its opening weekend and placed first in North America that weekend. That is a historical regional weekend result reported October 26, 2025—not a worldwide total or a measure of whether the film will suit you.
