During Saturday Night Live’s December 21, 2024, Christmas edition of “Weekend Update,” Colin Jost read a raunchy joke about his wife, Scarlett Johansson, written by Michael Che. Jost later said Johansson was “genuinely so shocked” by the joke. That description is Jost’s account of her reaction, not independent access to what she was thinking.
What happened on SNL?
The joke aired in the “Weekend Update” Christmas Joke Swap, a recurring bit in which anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che read jokes written by the other without seeing them beforehand. The official SNL video documents the live segment; its description says the anchors make each other read jokes they have never seen before on air.

The broadcast was Saturday Night Live Season 50, Episode 10, hosted by Martin Short, according to NBC’s program listing.
What did Colin Jost say about Scarlett Johansson?
One of Che’s jokes involved Johansson and a raunchy roast-beef reference. Jost read the line as part of the swap. The exact wording and delivery are best checked in the official SNL clip rather than reconstructed from summaries.
Contemporary coverage noted Johansson’s visible reaction during the broadcast. A facial expression on camera cannot establish her private feelings, however, and the clip alone does not show what she thought beyond that moment.

Jost later discussed the joke swap on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, saying Johansson was “genuinely so shocked.” That is Jost’s retrospective characterization of her response. It supports describing her as shocked, but does not establish that the joke caused a conflict or reveal anything about the couple’s private conversation afterward.
