“Right direction” here means more than delivering a shocking moment: Chapter 170 makes Denji’s circumstances matter to the story’s momentum. Read alongside the surrounding installments, its force comes from the collision of personal distress and sudden danger—not from shock alone. That is a critical reading of the chapter, not a claim that readers or critics have reached a consensus.
Why Chapter 170’s direction matters
Chainsaw Man Chapter 170 is part of an ongoing story, so its effect depends on the events around it. VIZ’s reader identifies Chapter 170 and lists Chapter 169 immediately before it; the page associates July 16, 2024, with the listing for Chapter 171. Read the chapter listing on VIZ.

The series was created by Tatsuki Fujimoto and began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018, according to VIZ’s official series page. That publication history is useful orientation, but it does not itself prove that this installment is a turning point. The case for the title’s verdict rests on what the chapter does with the story’s immediate stakes.
Denji’s distress gives the surrounding events weight
Shueisha’s official synopsis for Volume 19 places this stretch of the story after Nayuta has gone missing and describes Denji as downcast. Asa and the others head to a sushi restaurant, where an unexpected emergency arises on the way. Those details establish a context of loss and distress before the crisis intrudes; they are volume-level context, not a substitute for the chapter’s actual panels. Shueisha’s Volume 19 catalog entry.

That context clarifies what “right direction” can mean here. A development has emotional consequence when it lands in a life already under strain, rather than functioning as spectacle detached from character. The chapter’s directional strength is its placement of abrupt danger against Denji’s troubled circumstances. The shock matters because of the pressure surrounding it.
Why shock alone would not be enough
A startling turn can create momentum, but surprise is not automatically meaningful progress. The stronger reading of Chapter 170 is that it carries forward the emotional conditions established around Denji while changing the immediate situation. That balance—character consequence alongside escalation—is a more useful measure of direction than simply asking whether the chapter ends on a dramatic beat.

This remains an interpretation of one installment, not proof that every later choice will succeed. Chapter 170 supports a positive verdict because it connects danger to the ongoing story’s emotional stakes; whether the series sustains that balance is a question for the chapters that follow.
