The reported direction was the opposite: News On AIR reported on 3 July 2026 that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) had directed BARC to stop publishing ratings for both news and non-news channels until it renewed its licence and received certification of compliance with the new framework. Whether that suspension later ended is not established by the sources reviewed through 8 October 2026.
What is known about BARC’s ratings?
News On AIR reported on 3 July 2026 that the MIB directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to stop publishing television ratings across news and non-news genres pending licence renewal under the Television Rating Policy 2026 and certification that it complied with the framework. That report describes a suspension condition, not an instruction to release news TRPs.
The MIB’s policy listing, last updated 6 October 2026, includes the policy and an amendment dated 8 May. The listing confirms that an amendment exists, but the information reviewed does not establish its contents or say whether BARC renewed its licence, obtained compliance certification, or resumed publication. A later release order or resumption therefore cannot be confirmed from these sources.
What changed in the Television Rating Policy 2026?
Announced by the MIB on 27 March 2026, the Television Rating Policy 2026 replaced the 16 January 2014 Guidelines for TV Rating Agencies in India. It sets rules for agencies’ registration, operations, audits and oversight. Its stated direction is toward broader measurement and stronger transparency and accountability requirements.

Why do official summaries differ?
A 24 July 2026 parliamentary reply summarized some provisions differently from the MIB’s 27 March announcement. It cited a minimum of 33% independent directors and expansion from 50,000 to 80,000 metered homes, as well as establishment surveys every three years and annual independent audits. The March announcement instead states a 50% independent-director threshold, an eventual 120,000-home target, and quarterly internal audits alongside annual external audits.
The MIB policy listing also records an 8 May amendment, but the listing information reviewed does not explain whether it accounts for the differences. The summaries should not be treated as interchangeable legal text; the policy notification and amendment are needed to settle the detailed requirements.

What was BARC’s registration status?
The 24 July parliamentary reply said that no entity had been registered under the new policy as of that date. That is a dated status statement, not proof of the registration position in October. The sources described here do not establish BARC’s later licensing or compliance status.

The policy change is a replacement of the prior guidelines with a framework that specifies agency eligibility, panel expansion, cross-platform measurement, disclosure, privacy, audits, complaints and penalties. The MIB’s 27 March announcement says the net-worth threshold fell from ₹20 crore to ₹5 crore. The panel figures and governance provisions above are policy requirements and targets; they should not be read as evidence of what agencies have already implemented.
