In April 2024, a customer’s critical post about Fyre Bar & Restaurant in Connolly, Perth, was followed by online criticism and a reported burst of one-star Google reviews. PerthNow’s April 2 report recorded the customer’s allegations and chef John Mountain’s account of the fallout—but did not independently verify the meal, service exchange or identities of the reviewers.
What triggered the April 2024 dispute?
PerthNow reported that a diner posted a complaint in the Perth Foodies Facebook group on Monday, April 1, 2024, according to the report’s timeline. The post was later removed after Mountain alleged that its author was trying to sabotage his business. That was Mountain’s accusation; the report did not establish the poster’s motive.
The customer’s post, reproduced by the newspaper, alleged that a $60 steak was inedible, that staff responded abusively, and that they assumed the diner was vegan. The report did not independently verify the price, food, service interaction or visit. Fyre staff told PerthNow they had tried to identify the server or the specific dining experience but had not received an appropriate response. The customer was not identified in the article. PerthNow, April 2, 2024.
What happened to the Facebook post and Google reviews?
PerthNow said the Facebook-group post had drawn more than 250 reactions and 200 comments before it was removed. Mountain told the publication that Fyre had received 15 one-star Google reviews in the preceding 24 hours. The first figure is the newspaper’s reported count for the post; the second is Mountain’s account. Neither is an independently audited platform total, and neither should be read as a current review count.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Mountain questioned the legitimacy of reviews from people who had not visited the restaurant, saying: “You’ve got to at least come into the business to be able to give us a review,” he suggested. That was his view; the report did not establish a general rule governing who can submit a Google review.
It is therefore reasonable to describe the episode as a reported wave of one-star reviews, but the available reporting does not independently prove that the reviews were coordinated or that their authors had not dined at Fyre. Calling it a review-bombing campaign as settled fact would go beyond what the article established.

What did Mountain say about the online exchange?
Mountain acknowledged that another chef at Fyre had replied online to a friend of the diner. PerthNow reported that mistaken identity led the friend to believe Mountain was contacting them. The other chef then faced online and phone abuse, according to the report.
The account distinguishes the reported exchange from speculation about who wrote the Google reviews: it does not identify the review authors or establish their connection to the diner, the friend or the Facebook post.

Why were vegans and Tash Peterson part of the story?
The review dispute unfolded against the background of Mountain’s 2023 declaration that vegans were banned from Fyre and his public dispute with animal-rights activist Tash Peterson. PerthNow’s April 2024 article also referred to an altercation with Peterson in September and court proceedings it said were then expected in May, June and July 2024. Those were references to the situation as reported at the time; that article does not establish the proceedings’ eventual outcome or current status.

A later PerthNow report, published April 24, 2026, covered a different episode: backlash after Mountain used a rape-related phrase in a social video about a busy restaurant night, followed by an apology. It is separate from the 2024 customer complaint and review dispute, and should not be treated as part of the original “new wave” story. PerthNow, April 24, 2026.
