The latest reported update, published September 9, 2026, says Cristin Milioti had no new news and relays an earlier report describing the project as “in limbo” at DC Studios. Colin Farrell has said he would consider returning if there were a strong story, but his comments do not amount to a renewal or production commitment.
Has HBO renewed The Penguin for Season 2?
No public renewal or cancellation announcement from HBO or DC Studios is established by the available reporting. The latest status coverage is The Direct’s September 9, 2026 report on Milioti, which says she had “no new news to offer” and cites The Ankler’s description of the project as “in limbo” at DC Studios. That is attributed reporting, not a studio confirmation. The Direct’s September 2026 update

Earlier, in June 2026, ComicBook.com relayed entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider’s claim that DC and HBO were not moving forward with a second season. That report also does not establish an official decision announced by either studio. ComicBook.com’s report on Sneider’s claim
In January 2025, TVLine reported that quiet conversations about another season were underway. That historical report shows discussion had taken place, but it does not establish a current plan and predates the later, conflicting status accounts. TVLine’s January 2025 report

What has Colin Farrell said about returning?
He was open to continuing the story in 2024
At the series premiere, Farrell said The Penguin had been designed as an eight-part limited series, while leaving the door open to a continuation: “I mean, it was only ever designed as an eight-part limited [series], but yeah, I mean, I’d be open to anything for sure… I had a great time doing it.” His openness was conditional in practice: it did not announce a second season. TV Insider’s report from the 2024 premiere
In 2025, he said there was no need to rush
At the 2025 SAG Awards, Farrell said he was “in no rush” and did not want the series to continue simply because the first season had succeeded. He said he would be open to an idea that suited Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe. That was his view at the time, not a permanent refusal to return. Variety’s 2025 account

In June 2026, he put the Batman sequel first
Farrell’s June 2026 comments again tied a possible second season to whether the creative team had a worthwhile reason to make it. He described the sequel to The Batman as the immediate priority and left open the possibility of discussing the series afterward. That suggests a possible order of events, not a commitment to make Season 2. ComingSoon’s report on Farrell’s comments
As supporting context, GamesRadar+ reported that Farrell said he appears in two scenes in The Batman: Part II and praised the script. His role in the film does not resolve the series’ status. GamesRadar+ on Farrell’s comments about the sequel

Why the status remains uncertain
The reports point in different directions: June coverage attributed a no-go claim to Sneider, while September coverage described the project as in limbo and reported that Milioti had no new update. Neither is a direct statement from HBO or DC Studios. Farrell’s remarks explain his willingness to return only if the story merits it; they cannot confirm what the studios have decided.
The clearest answer is therefore that Season 2’s public status remains unresolved. The original series was conceived as an eight-part limited series, and a continuation would require both a studio decision and a story Farrell considers worthwhile.
