What happens in chapter 178?
Yoru transforms or awakens the Statue of Liberty as a gun-wielding threat and uses it to attack Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil. The reveal and the attack form the chapter’s central shock: a landmark usually associated with civic ideals becomes an instrument of destruction, while Chainsaw Man is left facing an immediate threat.
MANGA Watch’s September 25, 2024 report on Shonen Jump+ describes the statue changing form through Yoru’s power and the attack putting Chainsaw Man in danger. A chapter reference likewise summarizes the statue firing at Pochita. The chapter is titled “Gun Goddess” (銃の女神).
Why the imagery feels so bleak
A familiar monument becomes a weapon
The Statue of Liberty is recognizable before it is frightening. Recasting it as a gun-wielding threat creates a sharp contrast between an image associated with public ideals and an act of violence. That symbolic reading follows from the chapter’s imagery; it should not be mistaken for a confirmed statement of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s intent.

The attack expands the sense of danger
The spectacle suggests danger on a scale beyond a close-quarters fight. The chapter’s imagery prompted one reader in a September 24, 2024 r/ChainsawMan discussion to describe it as “The Founding Titan emerges from the Statue of Liberty and fires an intercontinental railgun through Chainsaw Man.” That is an individual reaction, not a measure of the attack’s literal range or a representative view of readers.
Pochita is not untouchable
The reveal matters because the attack targets Pochita and places him in danger. The shock comes not only from the size of the weapon, but from seeing a powerful character exposed to an overwhelming threat.

Is it really the manga’s darkest chapter?
There is no objective scale that establishes one Chainsaw Man chapter as the darkest. The claim works best as an argument about this installment’s particular combination of elements: a disturbing transformation of a familiar landmark, a spectacular attack, and Pochita’s vulnerability. Readers may judge darkness by other standards, such as grief, cruelty, or lasting consequences, so the title is a critical interpretation rather than a series-wide fact.
Some comments in the same Reddit discussion expressed surprise and admiration for the Statue of Liberty reveal. Those reactions show how striking the image was for some readers, but a forum thread cannot establish a consensus. Nor do the cited chapter references establish casualty counts or the attack’s full consequences.

When and where was chapter 178 released?
Shonen Jump+ released chapter 178 on September 25, 2024, according to MANGA Watch’s contemporaneous report. VIZ’s chapter listing displayed September 24. The one-day difference reflects how services can display publication dates across timing or time-zone conventions; these listings refer to the same chapter, not separate releases.
VIZ provides an official English chapter listing and a catalog of collected Chainsaw Man volumes. The official pages reviewed do not establish which English print volume contains chapter 178, so a specific volume number should not be assumed. Check a volume’s contents listing before buying it to read this chapter in print.
