Qantas apologized after Daddio, a film containing sexual material and nudity, was played on screens across a Sydney-to-Haneda flight when technical problems reportedly prevented passengers from choosing films individually. Crew later switched the screens to a children’s movie. The airline said it was reviewing how the film was selected.
What happened on the Qantas flight?
Passengers were travelling from Sydney to Haneda, Tokyo, when a technical issue reportedly made individual movie selection unavailable. According to The Guardian’s October 7, 2024 report, crew responded to passenger requests by playing Daddio on all screens. After passengers realized what the film contained, crew stopped it and put on a children’s movie for the remainder of the flight.
The Guardian reported a passenger describing the film as “40 minutes of penis and boobs” and saying there were “audible gasps across the plane.” Some passengers also said the screens appeared locked, so they could not turn off the movie themselves before staff changed it. Those are passenger accounts; the report does not establish that every screen behaved the same way.
What did Qantas say?
A Qantas spokesperson apologized, saying: “The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight and we sincerely apologise to customers for this experience.” The spokesperson added: “All screens were changed to a family-friendly movie for the rest of the flight, which is our standard practice for the rare cases where individual movie selection isn’t possible.”

On how the film ended up on the shared screens, the spokesperson said: “We are reviewing how the movie was selected.” The Guardian did not name the spokesperson.
What is Daddio, and what do its ratings mean?
Daddio is a 2023 film starring Dakota Johnson. The Guardian reported its U.S. rating as R for “language, sexual material and brief graphic nudity,” and its Australian classification as MA15+ for “strong coarse language and nudity.” These are labels from different national rating systems, not interchangeable classifications.

- Confirmed in the reporting: Qantas said technical issues prevented individual movie selection; the film was played across the screens, then replaced by a children’s movie; and the airline apologized and said it was reviewing the selection.
- Not established: the specific equipment fault, the approval or decision-making chain, how long the film played before it was stopped, or whether passengers received compensation.
The Guardian’s account records Qantas’s explanation, but it does not provide an independent technical diagnosis. The reported review likewise does not establish that a particular employee, system, or approval step was responsible.
